I thought about using just an oversized skimmer as the sole water movement for a nano.
Anyone ever do this? Thoughts?

I have never just run a skimmer, but with a smallish tank say 10 gal and under it might produce enough water movement.

I have. I ran a prizm on my 5.5g .
Worked good, but I always had a ph problem. I think it was due to over skimming but I have no scientific proof. All I know is that when I stopped the ph was stable?

I would think in the right situation it would be fine for water movement. However there is a concern with overskimming as fragmaster mentioned. I suppose you could just buy a large, crappy skimmer, so it has a lot of flow, but doesn't take as much out of the water. Or with a good skimmer just keep up on WC's or supplements.

I ran a CPR bakpak 2R running off a maxijet 1200 on a 10g for about a month. It didn't give me enough flow to even keep some zoa frags I had in there. I had to add a ph. Maybe something like xenias and shrooms would be happy with that little bit of flow but not too much else.

Thanks all, I was thinking along the lines of a ER 6-1 on a 15-20 gallon tank but hadn't considered the overskimming issue.

I've run a 10 gallon nano with a Whisper 3, one with an Emperor 280, and one with a Seaclone.

No problems on any of them as far as generating enough flow.

Peace,

Trying it now in a 20 gal nano. Have a Aquamedic turbofloater with rio 2100. A maxijet 1200 for flow. Don't have any other filter in it besides live rock. Tomato clown is in it, but it a tough little guy. Tank got real messy but is now cleaned up with a viper 150DE light. Water so clear....
