I've had a 75 gallon reef in my basement for a few years now and so now I'm interested in starting a little 20 gallon. I was thinking I would do a 20 gallon tank with approximately 20 lbs of small live rock and a live sand bed. For livestock, I want to put in a pair of Orange Firefish, a Coral Banded Shrimp, and possibly some snails. I'm not interested in making this tank a reef.

My questions:
1) How many pounds of live sand should I buy to get say a 3 inch sandbed?
2) I'm debating whether I want a long tank or a tall tank. A few months ago I was interested in buying a tall tank for seahorses so I was thinking that if the firefish don't work out I could still get the seahorses. What kind of tank would be better for these fish?
3) I don't really want to put this tank in my basement next to my 75 gallon because nobody gets to see it down there. I was thinking I would put it on my main floor somewhere in the hall. Given the tank water, the stand, the 20 lbs of rock, and whatever equipment, would the tank eventually fall into the basement if I put it in the hall? Is it going to be too heavy? (I live in a semi-detached house, generally pretty strong floors)

Thanks

1) a 3" sandbed will be around 20-30lbs IIRC

2) for seahorses a high tank will be the best but long would work nicely for fish

3) it should be fine.. My 20 gal reef tank is on the second floor of my appartment

Just out of curiousity, would I be able to replace the two Firefish with two Curious Wormfish instead? I've already taken care of that Firefish in the past and I like to learn about different types in the species. Would they be prey to the Banded Coral Shrimp? If yes, I would reconsider adding the shrimp because I'm really interested in trying these guys.

that maybe an awful lot for a small tank. the curious worm fish or goby get about 5" and you want two in there ontop of firefish. The shrimp wouldnt be bothered by either species of fish. Ive never had a fish only tank so the four maybe ok. They wont bother eachother if thats any consolation

No you misunderstood. I don't want the Firefish anymore. I want the Wormfish and Banded Coral Shrimp.
