I just read a book (please don't laugh) called Saltwater for Dummies. It did explain most of how I can start say a 15 - 20 gallon nano tank. But I was hoping someone could direct me to a book, website of something that will help me figure out what I need, and what works nice together in a nano tank. Honestly, I assume a nano tank is called that just cause it's a bit small.

Thanks for your help !

:welcome:

You're right, it's called a nano because it's on the wee side. There are even pico tanks out there which are amazingly small. I wouldn't advise you go any smaller than you've suggested though, as the smaller the tank, the harder it is to keep the water conditions stable.

First off, some questions. What are you intending to keep in your nano? Fish only, or fish with some coral? There are different books I'd recommend for either. One if Aquarium corals by Eric Borneman (http://www.amazon.ca/exec/obidos/AS...24650/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_0_1/702-6589469-8228055), the other Scott Michael's book of Aquarium fish http://www.amazon.ca/exec/obidos/AS...8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl/702-6589469-8228055

jaretz28,

Another great place to get information is the nano build off forum found here http://www.reefs.org/phpBB2/viewforum.p ... b305972a5c

specificly guy's thread. He has done wonders with his and it is a "Most Excent Tank." Also floris reef tanks as it was set up in a classroom as a learning tank. Both will give you alot of very useful information as will all the others in there.

Don't be afraid of the "search" feature of the bb and if you don't find what your looking for ask a question. http://www.reefs.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=33928 also very useful information as does http://www.reefs.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=7679

Good luck with your new tank.

You also want to do as much research on your own as possible. Do not ask one person for an answer and expect it to be correct. for each question you ask to 10 people you will get 10 different answers. Synthesize your answer from several sources. I dont care who the person you ask is, their way may not work for your particular circumstance. You are a noob and thats the only way to start, but be warned, if you ask too many stupid questions you will not get a lot of help from most forum residents. Do your research, and if you cant find an answer, then ask. another place to check is nano-reef.com IMO the best nano site available.

Great advice all. I also learned tough lessons in early nano reefs by trying to apply similar dosing and maintenance schedules used for larger setups... nanos crash so much faster than a 40+ gallon! So, in comparing apples to apples I'd also like to add that nano-specific advice helps really well for the aquarium design you seek, sometimes those agile standard-size reefers make generalizations that won't help you much when times are bad... :) stay here with us, read those books, and these guys and gals will keep you afloat

I would like to thank everyone for replying. I maybe should of looked a bit harder for the answer next time. I will read the books, and do my homework. But let's be honest, I don't have the personal experience you folks have, so......I will be asking more questions. I guarantee it !!! Thanks again.
