Here she is.

Pay no attention to what's in the tank. I just wanted to show off the set up. I just have some base rock, crushed coral, and a silly castle. Current resident is a striped damsel named Humbug that belongs to my father in law. He is my guest until the in laws move and set up a new tank. Once the tank stabalizes, I'll add about 10 pounds more live rock from my tank and a bunch of frags.

Tank is the regular petco/petsmart/walmart 10 gallon. The light is a 96w PC retro kit purchased from ebay. It has a hang on filter with fiber and carbon in it, a power head for circulation, and a nano skimmer (once it got seasoned, it started producing good crud. They send you ten replacement micro-bubble filters which keep the micro-bubbles to a minimum. For the low price, I'm satisfied with it as a mini-skimmer, although it does take up some room in the tank. I hope to hide it behind some rock later).

Unfortunately, my wife is into interior design, so I have to make things look good on the outside. I made the hood out of some sand ply and put on three coats of stain on the outside to match a cheap table I stained a few years ago. Then I put on a few coats of urithane (sp) on outside and inside to protect the wood from moisture. I put on some decorative moulding around the lid and around the bottom of the tank to hide the ugly black tank frame. My wife is pleased with the look.

I like the little tank. Might be the fact that it's new, but I like it better than the monster tank in the living room. 8)

NICE!!!
SO whats the deal with those nano skimmers Manny?
are they crap or do they realy work well?
Bubbles in the tank or anything ? Can you adjust them?
I would love to get one for my dwarf seahorse nano if they work and are user friendly.

The skimmer is very user friendly. The pump has an adjustment for strength. To adjust the air intake, you could just instal a standard valve at the end of the air line, but I don't think it needs it. To adjust the level of the foam, you can raise or lower the skimmer...the water line is the only way to adjust that, kind of how an in sump skimmers internal water line will go up and down with the water level in the sump.

It comes with these filter rings that are meant to stop bubbles. At first, it was micro-bubble hell in there, but after a week or so, the little filter ring started collecting some filth that actually helped stop the bubbles. Then when the skimmer "seasoned" within about two weeks, it started producing decent crud.

All in all, I would say that it is a functional skimmer. Certainly not ideal, but it is so damn cheap that for the price, any skimming at all is good skimming in my book.

And it does take a little bit of adjustment to get it not to flood the cup. It tends to do that. I put a drain line out so that if it does flood the cup, it won't just overflow the dirty water into the tank (the cup has a drain line feed that comes capped, so you can easily attach a standard air line as a drain line and run it into a receptical). The main problem is getting the think to drain over the rim of the tank. So you have to have a water level high enough so that the bend in the drain line going over the tank is lower than the lip of the collection cup, or else the drain line is worthless. That means your water level has to be pretty close to the top of the tank.

I guess you could run this skimmer without a drain line, but you'd have to check it constantly to actually get crud out of it before it overflows the cup and washes the funk back into your tank.

So all in all:

Positives: Price!!!!, size, user friendly, plug and play (no rigging stuff to your tank)

Negatives: Variable foam production makes for regular cup overflow necessitating a drain line that may not work if your water level is far below the lip of the tank.

Neutrals: Micro-bubbles...they aren't too bad, but they are still there, and any skimmer pouring water directly back into the tank without a bunch of filters between it and the main tank water is going to spit out a few bubbles, so I don't call it a negative. Takes up space in your tank...I think this is offset by the plug and play factor and the price.

That is my full review.

how did you get those 2 90 degree tubes to connect?
You mean on the skimmer?

They come that way. The pump can set up to the skimmer several different ways and comes with various tubes and attachments for the differnet configurations. It can be next to it or under it. I just thought this way would be easier to hide behind some rocks or macro algae down the road.

I get your problem! It happened to me too. I used a small nail file to grind the inside rim of the one elbow piece so the other would fit into it. It didn't take much filing...2 minutes at the most. Then the two pieces fit together just right. :)

I don't think this skimmer would be too good for anything bigger than that nano cube you're talking about. For a tankn larger than 25 gallons, I'd start looking at something more powerful.

Here it is as of today. Used some branch rock purchased at the LFS along with some flat rocks to make shelves. I added some purple rocks from my tank and some green star polyps and mushrooms.

I'm happy with the rock work. Now I just have to stock it with some decent corals.
