The experiments have begun

The first is with the bulb at 12 inches from the bottom of the tank.

No fan

The cabinet is not closed off yet though, so there should be quite a bit of air getting to it

That bulb will freakin hurt your eyes if you look at it just briefly!

Oh, the tank is 2 gallons

The bulb is 175 watt Coralife 10000K MH

The water in the tank is a cool 68 degrees

The beginning of this phase of experimentation started at 8:00 pm EST

WOOT!

Why is that?

Nothing is proved yet, it just started about 15 minutes ago...

Okay

After one hour the temp was 71 degrees

I think with a fan on it I could keep the temp stable, 3 degrees an hour is not too much of a change to deal with.

There is one problem with this though....

The cabinet got too hot. Not hot enough to burn, but with it all enclosed like I was planning it would get hot enough to burn without a fan.

Since I do not want a fire, and I have had fans fail before

I am canning that cabinet.

Where to go from here, I don't know, I am going to have to do some planning.

No, if I left it on for 10 hours straight I suppose it would get about 30 degrees hotter. Add that to the 68 degrees and we have 98 degrees.

Still not hot enough to boil hot dogs.

Plenty hot enough to get a bath in though...

I am still going to do this, I just need a Cabinet that can either

1. Take that kind of heat safely without burning

or

2. Can be ventilated well enough to keep its self cool.

So, its off to the drawing board

I have a metal stand for a 20 high sitting in the basement. Its the base to my Quarantine tank which is not set up right now.

I might have to do something with that, we will have to see....

Not really, the further past the ambient air temp the faster it will bleed off excess heat.

What about lining the inside of the cabinet with foil, shiney side pointing in?

The cabinet is just too small, there is only like an inch between the reflector and the wood, and that is just too close

I am thinking about building something, but its gonna have to wait.

I have mantle to build and a tub to install first.
