You don't need to remove the hood to get the powerhead out. But if you do want to remove the hood I think it varies by the model. I just the hinges on mine off. Sort of a permanent solution to your problem though.
I to upgraded the powerhead in my jbj. to remove the top tilt all the way back as far as it will go, the hinges are kinda of a cam action. they need to be lined up for the hinge to slide out. look closely and u will see the solution.
