12gal nano...filtration?'s

I am running my 12 gal nano "as is" from the store. I am not sure if i should be taking some of the stuff (sponges, rings, bio-balls, etc.) out. I have been told many different things from people at the fish store (workers and shoppers), but after reading many things on this site I would like to hear from some tried and tested methods.

If anyone have some pics they can post i would love to check them out.

I was told to take out the ringd and balls and leave the charcol in for like 3 weeks then take it out and leave the sponges
