My nanocube is close to finishing its cycle, and I'm trying to decide what I want to stock it with. I only want 2 fish, one will be a clown goby, and I need suggestions for the other. Preferably a fish that will be out in the open more, as the goby will probably be more cryptic. I am open to all suggestions. Thanks!

Good suggestions so far. But unfortunately I already have a six line and royal gramma in my 40 gallon, so i'm looking for something a little different. I was considering clowns, but eventually they'll get too big, so I haven't decided one way or another yet.

how about a fridmani pseudochromis-they're curious and alaways seem to be more or less in the open(frequently anyway).

hmm, i didnt think of that, a shrimp-goby pair would definitely be cool. I have a yellow watchman in my other tank and love him, always fun to watch. Would having a pistol shrimp in this small of a tank limit the other shrimp I could have? I would like to get a sexy anemone shrimp or two, and possibly a small cleaner or peppermint, haven't decided yet, but I hear sometimes pistols can be mean. Anyone know if this is true?

Yeah, that's a lot of shrimp. One of the toughest parts about a nano (IMO) is having to be extra choosy about what you put in it. I WANT IT ALL!!

Anyhow, yea, the pistol shrimp can be territorial. Territorial behavior in animals is usually aggravated in smaller spaces. This is true of fish and crustaceans as well. So that's something to think about. Skip the cleaner and the peppermint completely. Get the pistol to pair with the goby and then get your secksay anemone scrimper. Or some bumblebee scrimps or something.

Haha, yeah i hear that, I would pack my tanks with everything i could get my hands on if it were possible...
But I guess this just means more planning to make sure I get what I really want. I don't really need the pepp's or cleaner, i have them in my other tank, so maybe a pistol/goby would work, with a smaller shrimp or two like an anemone or bumblebee. I assume a porcelain crab would get along with these guys ok too...

I just have the two yellow clown gobies. I do have two porcelain crabs in there with my 5 hermits, and it's been all good. One is a white (anemone hosting) porcelain and the other is the purple/pink/orange decorator porcelain (not really a decorator, he's just another fan-hands filter feeder).

You can see it all here. Note: anemone dead. :(

Meloco14,
I'd be a bit careful about getting any smaller sized crustaceons for your tank if you already have a six-line wrasse. I've heard they will attack small shrimps. I haven't seen this, but then again I've never put any small shrimp in with my six-line... HTH.

I didn't know that, thanks for the tip. But just to clarify, I have the 6-line in my 40 gallon tank, which at this point only has one cleaner shrimp. I am thinking of getting the smaller shrimp for my nanocube. But now that I know this I will be careful about adding any small crustaceans to my 40...

So last night I was considering the whole pistol shrimp goby thing and came to this realization. The tank is right next to my bed! I don't want to be woken up in the middle of the night to the sound of pop pop pop. I'm a light sleeper too. But I personally have never heard a pistol. Is it loud? Does it only pop as a defense mechanism? This shrimp probably wont be threatened in this tank, with only 2 small gobies and maybe another small shrimp or two. So maybe he wont pop much at all

I think I'm leaning toward a firefish and clown goby. Haven't decided if I want the regular or purple firefish though

A pistol won't wake you up, unless you're a very light sleeper ;)

Imagine snapping your fingers at half strength, that's the closest analogy I can think of. Also, they don't snap much after a while. Mine just eats scraps of flake food.

From what I understand rainford's and hector's gobies (Amblygobius spp.) don't do well unless they're in large, mature tanks. They don't really eat flake and graze microalgae and the like on live rock.
