We have a 12 gallon JBJ Nano Cube that has been up and running for almost 4 weeks.

A soft thin maroon gelatinous material has began to grow on one of the pieces of live rock.It is very interesting looking and is slowly spreading.

Any ideas as to what this is?

8O OH MY GOD! RUN!! RUUUUUUUUUN!

Just kidding. :D

I've wanted to be the first to say this for a while...

Do you have a picture of it?
Seriously, if you get a picture, it really helps.

Heh, personally I didn't mind it. Bingo's calls me a "meat popsicle", and no one seems to have a problem with that.

snails,
It sounds like a common sponge. If it's growing, that's a very good sign. Sometimes when you break down an old tank you'll find sponges covering the entire shadowed portion of football sized rocks...kind of amazing the amount of life that exists in your tank without your knowledge!

I have a picture saved on My Computer, but it appears that I cannot download the image at this location. Is this true? I tried to attach the picture but no luck.
