Try shooting pictures WITHOUT the flash. Turn all the lights off in the room and make it as dark as possible in there, and then just have the tank lights on. Try that and see how much of a difference it will make.

you dont have to turn off the flash. I have the 5700 as well as the 4500. The 5700 has a ISO setting that you should turn all the way up by pressing on the flash button and moving the dial at once. It should top out at 800. Then use the dark/light button in the same way to adjust the lightness/darkness of the photo (that little pos/neg button next to the FUNC button. If you need to use the flash, you can also fiddle with the White Balance in the photo menu to perfect the colors. Make sure the Macro mode is on because then the camera will focus through glass better then. Enable noise reduction for low light shots. Be aware that the 5700 really sux at low-level autofocus so you may have to focus on a lighter area at the same distance...lock the shutter/focus...then move back to the pic you want to take.

These are the most common things I find myself doing, sometimes only one, sometimes almost every one, to get just the right pic with the 5700 when photographing aquariums.
