Thickness of glass

I am toying with the idea of makeing a 12" cube. What thickness of glass should I use. Is there better glass then others? I would most likely buy from Home depot or lowes. What type of silcone should I use.

I don't know much about glass, but I do know you should use
aquarium grade silicone sealant used for construction of aquariums.
The other stuff has chemicals in it harmful to our "critters".

I would suggest acrylic. It bonds better and is easier to work with. For a tank that small It would be rather inexpensive to make one and you can make custom sizes too cause its easy to drill.

I'm with supaboy, but it does take some practice gluing acrylic without bubbles or leaks. Good thing it's cheap for scraps to practice on.
