  1. More ?'s. Going to try and take care of this ich problem.

I'm not sure if 30 gallons is large enough. You should definitely keep them separate from each other in any case, with dividers or something. Has the sponge filter cycled, or is it brand new? You will need to keep an eye on ammonia and nitrite levels, and do water changes when necessary...
  2. Weekly Discussion - Against the Grain

Here's a link where I give a detailed description, and it includes a link to the site where I got the plans. http://reefs.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t ... ight=surge OK, wombat must go back into hibernation now....
  3. Weekly Discussion - Against the Grain

Hmmm, the link doesn't work anymore. It was a friend's webpage. I think I may have posted them at some point, I'll try and find the pics.
  4. Weekly Discussion - Against the Grain

Shane, the pics you're looking for are in the link in my signature of my 30 gallon tank. They were 2 gallon trash cans that sat on the back of the tank, and they fit under the canopy. They cost about 25 bucks a piece to build, but only b/c I used threaded PVC with teflon tape. Slip fittings...
  5. 29 gal. lighting wattage

You could easily keep mushrooms and probably just about any soft coral as well. Assuming all the other parameters are OK I think you could even keep stony corals close to the light.
  6. Adding DSB to a tank with livestock...

The best way to do it is to seed the sand in a separate container, to allow bacteria to attach to the grains. Supposedly this makes the grains heavier and there will be less cloudiness when added to the tank. A little sand storm won't hurt your fish or anemone, IMO.
  7. Sting rays

I think you should get a copy of Scott W Michael's book "Aquarium Sharks and Rays". Some rays are completely suitable for large home aquariums such as yours, while others fare terribly in captivity. Do you know what species it is? The ray I see most often is Taenimura lymna (sp?), the Blue...
  8. A Poll started by someone other than Len!

Just trying to get a feel for how big of a tank you would have before investing in one.... and getting in a jab at Len while I'm at it :P
  9. What could be raising pH?

I've heard bad stories about the tricks the AC adaptor plays. I'm with Louey, 8.6 isn't going to kill anything. I assume your Alk is normal?
  10. My 6 gallon SPS/Clam tank

Thanks. It's a Lights of America 65W PC bulb and a 13W PC actinic. I don't think a MH would fit in an eclipse hood! There is more detail on the construction of the tank here: http://reefs.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=26657
  11. What could be raising pH?

Lots of photosynthetic activity that pulls CO2 out of the water can raise your pH. OR your battery on your pH monitor could be getting low. It reads high (Mine told me my tank was at 10.6 at one point, freaked me out!) when the batteries are almost out.
  12. These things are really starting to annoy me...

My thoughts exactly, SM. These things reproduce really well all over my tank, especially in high flow areas like the surge bucket. They filter the water and I think they're pretty interesting to watch. No sense in killing them...

Here's the goby. She of course came fully out for 5 seconds right when my memory card ran out...doh!
  15. What is this? (Came with "The Package")

Ah, the monitor I was using earlier sucked. That appears to me to be a Condylactis gigantea, the Atlantic anemone. Can we see a picture of it outside of the bag?
