  1. Strange pH question

I forgot to add a few things. The salt was instant ocean and it was the correct salinty: 1.023. What makes it even stranger to me is that the water straight from the reverse osmosis/ deionizer is around a pH of 9. nils
  2. Strange pH question

My tanks pH has been always depressed: around 8 or so. My animals all seem to be fine however. With my recently bough ph meter I have found something interesting. I mixed some saltwater on saturday. And the ph was fine at first: around 8.3 but then several hours later it was down to 8.15...then...
  3. Sand bed question

I am moving things into my new tank from my old one. The new one has a sand bed of about 3-4 inches. I was wondering if moving my serpent starfish to my new tank would disrupt the sand bed. nils
  4. MH height above water

I recently bought two 150 watt HQI DE setups with a Sunlight Supply Reef III reflecter (with a glass shield maybe 3 inches from the bulb to the glass)...how high do you think I should have it over the water? nils
  5. MH height above water

What other reasons, if any, besides heat are the reason we should keep Metal Halides 8 inches or so above the water. I was just wondering that if heat were not a problem wouldn't it be better to get much more light in simply by putting it closer. nils
  6. Aptasia go by by..

For in the future...! :D I have found that NaOH (sodium hydroxide) works very well. The plus about it is you don't have to actually inject it but only get in the area. It creates a chemical reaction that burns the anenome. It worked for me using 4% solution that I had from a chemistry set! Just...
  7. Need help with my 250W DIY HQI setup please!!

You can find the stuff at lampsnow.com . I am also interested in DE HIDs and would like to see other set ups as well nils
  8. lights and hard ware for tank

Nobody knows anything about where to buy T-5s :( :D
  9. lights and hard ware for tank

Mouse, you mentioned T-5s, where can you get them? I emailed icecap and my ballast will drive them, just need to find out how/where to get them, i have looked at www.osram.com but it is not very clear which ones to get. thanks, nils
  10. T-5 flourescents

I read in two german magazines "Koralle" and "Der Meerwasseraquarianer" about the new 16 mm flourescents. I was wondering if there is anything written in English on the subject. The two articles I read talked about switching from 400 watt HID to 54 watt t-5s, one was running 8 400 watt bulbs and...
  11. 55 gallon tank questions

Oh Wasabi, I though that just emphasized how much you like your 55gallon!
  12. Light intensity meters?

    Bump, any other people?!
  13. Light intensity meters?

Galleon, I agree with what you have said, and when I said Einstein/m^2/s, I wanted to say E/m^2/T , where T=seconds. And yes I know 6.02*10^23 is Avogradro's number. 1 mole of Oxygen takes up a volume of 22.4 litres, has a mass of ~16 grams... I think one Einstein=1 proton (do you think proton...
  14. Light intensity meters?

I would like to know more about this too. I think it is a good indicator for how much light is in your tank. I know we don't see very well into the violet spectrum, a little better in the blue, but those aren't the only wavelenghts that corals use. In the Modern Coral Reef Aquarium it states...
  15. Light intensity meters?

Hey Galleon I am looking forward to reading your data when you post it . KenH I have 3 VHO bulbs on my 55, even though your set up is much brighter I would still like to know your levels! Do you think you could measure the levels near different corals? That would be great. I have a cheap one...
