  1. Xenia not pulsing

You didn't mention what your water flow is like?? I have 2 powerheads, one is constantly 'on' the other is on a timer. When the more powerful powerhead's timer kicks it on there is much more current in the tank and my xenia does not pulse at all. When it turns off my xenia resumes it's...
  2. My fraternity is hooked to saltwater tanks

This thread reminds me of my high school days when I was at a party. The guy that was throwing the party had these huge freshwater tanks with Oscars...his favorite things in life were mean fish, mean dogs, pot, and guns in no particular order. Anyway, at this party (as always) he was bragging...
  3. tank backgrounds- poll

I like black...in my opinion it gives the tank a better illusion of depth, powerheads and plumbing are more invisible, and if algae starts growing on the back it looks nicer as well. I don't like the look of algae on a light blue background and powerheads and pipes stick out like a sore thumb...
  4. how many and what kind of powerheads?

You didn't mention what the dimensions of your tank were...I'd assume that it's similar to mine? I have a 40(37 actual)gallon tank that is 36x15x16. It's a wide low (widescreen aspect ratio )tank. I put in one MaxiJet 600 and added a MaxiJet 900 last week. The MJ600 was perfect for one side...
  5. Nikon Coolpix 995 Digital Camera

I have an Olympus C-3000Z that I LOVE! It's one of the only $$ purchases that I've made recently in which I'm $100% happy with it. It's macro feature works pretty good for closups, and you can add different magnifiers, macro lenses, and filters. As I recall, the reason I picked it over the...
  6. Does anybody go skimmerless, and sumpless?

Rich, -Hi from a fellow 'Portlander'! Although I'm by far no expert having only been in the saltwater hobby a few weeks, I've done a bunch of research before setting up my tank and have a few ideas you might want to consider. You mentioned that you didn't test for Phosphates...from everything...
  7. Can anyone help me identify this hitchhiker (pic)?

I'm just trying to identify it and determine if it's good or bad before it's a problem...thanks!
  8. Grey sticks?...

    Here's a picture of them...dead worms??
  9. Grey sticks?...

-I'm pretty sure it's not fish-poo...I don't have any fish yet!
  10. Grey sticks?...

Does anyone know what the 1/2"-1" length grey or whitish (sand colored) 'sticks' I keep finding on my substrate could be? If they are worms they are apparently dead (don't move). Any help identifiying them would be greatly appreciated...thanks!
  11. Bedroom Reef - what do you think?

Although not an expert on reef tanks, having just set mine up last week, I do have some experience with beds and/or having a bedroom fish tank. As for the tank in the bedroom, there IS some noise and it might take a bit of getting used to. Once I was used to the sound the hum of the pumps and...
  12. Maxijet 600 or 1200, or does it matter?

I'm by far no expert (3 weeks into assembling my saltwater/reef setup) but do have SOME experience with both the MJ600 and MJ1200. I used both powerheads lastnight to mix my salt, mixing a 5 gal bucket at a time. The MJ1200 is MUCH more powerful than the 600. The 600 is a good pump and will be...
