  1. question for all you chemists out there (Calcium Hydroxide)

This thread is almost 5 yrs old!!
  2. can i feed my fish live shrimp

I had assumed he was wanting to add live adult brine shrimp either from an LFS or from LiveBrineshrimp.com but maybe I am wrong. The protein level of newly hatched nauplii is high in lipids, and low in protein. As they proceed through the molts, they become higher in protein and lower in...
  3. Chemistry question:

Not sure on that but I know that two members in the local club used Phosban with no success and when they used ROWAphos, the problem was solved.
  4. can i feed my fish live shrimp

In actual fact, brine shrimp are not devoid of nutrition like many have been posting for so long. Adult live brine shrimp from Great Salt Lake cysts will have protein levels in the high 50% range based on dry weight percentages. Gut loading can either improve this figure, or increase the lipid...
  5. Chemistry question:

I've gone through hair stages many times with all my tanks over the last 14 yrs and they solve the problem on their own as the tank matured. However, when I set up the last 90g tank, the hair algae would not go away. I purchased a product recommended by my LFS and members of our reefing club...
  6. culturing rotifers

http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issues/ ... reeder.htm If you google "culturing rotifers" you will find a heck of a lot of links.
  7. Thinking of starting a Seahorse Aquarium!

I personally don't have corals in my horse tank. Again, there are differences of opinion on what corals are acceptable. For sure you don't want any that can "sting" the horses. Best filtration system will depend on who you talk to. For me, I use live rock. Like I mentioned in my first post, the...
  8. Thinking of starting a Seahorse Aquarium!

Unfortunately here in Canada, we do not have major breeders of captive bred (read "tank bred and raised") seahorses. This means that we are usually only exposed to wild caught (cheap) horses, or net pen raised horses that many times are labeled as captive bred. Terminology should be changed IMO...
  9. Artemia based 'simulator' tank.

If you ever want to get back to artemia, the most informative information available is on a U.N. website for production of live foods for aquaculture, with the artemia information coming from the Artemia Reference Center at the University of Ghent. CLICK HERE AND SCROLL DOWN TO SECTION 4.0, ARTEMIA
  10. Artemia based 'simulator' tank.

I have Never seen a pump that artemia could survive going through for any length of time and I've been raising brine shrimp for many many years. An airlift tube has limited lift capability but can lift water containing earlier stage artemia but the force of air required would blow apart the...
  11. Brine Shrimp Hatching

Brine Shrimp Direct does not recommend any contact of cysts, OR hatching water, with your tank water. Artemia Reference Center says to hatch and rinse before using as food or growing out artemia. Aquaculture companies hatch, rinse, and grow out. Reason for this? Cysts can and sometimes do...
  12. Live food for YOUR reef?

I actually don't know what kind it is. It was originally started with a live Nano concentrate from ReefCrew here in Ontario Canada. I spit it into five lots and cultured it. They all appeared to die off but then went green again so I kept them going. Four of the five developed very well but had...
  13. Live food for YOUR reef?

I've never known any cyro NOT to stink. They all stink different but all bad as far as I'm concerned. The smell is not strong, especially after dilution, but if I get the concentrate on my hands I certainly want to wash it off. Tahitian Blend has the worst smell as far as I'm concerned, and...
  14. Live food for YOUR reef?

First of all, consider that just a "wet" net used in a container/tank with a bad bacteria and then used, without "proper" rinsing, in another tank, can cause the second tank to be affected by that bad bacteria which will multiply in it's new surroundings. I certainly don't want to add that...
  15. How much can you safely restrict a water pump's flow?

You don't have to throttle the flow back if you run a parallel circuit with one circuit going through the chiller and the other going back to the tank. You would only have to restrict one line and the extra flow will go through the unrestricted circuit.
