  1. Upgrading lights, questions...

Well, I guess no response means it's an ivalid question, or after 31 posts no one thinks it warrants a reply. Just needed some ideas. It's a shame this forum has degraded to a flame-site where open ideas are squashed. Perhaps if membership slowly dwindles down to the esoteric few that feel...
  2. Upgrading lights, questions...

I'm thinking on going with the Icecap 250W E-Ballast and Iwasakis. I've heard the Iwasakis are fairly yellow, True? I plan on supplementing with URI, VH actinics. Question: Is there a better 250 watt system, or is this one good? Second, I've heard of overdriving some bulbs to peak them...
  3. RO/DI

Well, we've come full circle. My point on the refugium is this: A nearly "out of control, algae-wise" refugium, will absorb a great deal of the phantom "TDS" worries that you preach as the bane of the captive reef. Emotional backing of your belief is noteworthy, but next time, try to make...
  4. Necrotic tissue in Sarcophyton

This is an easy fix. Remove the sarco, use tank water in a container, hold the frag under water and lightly brsh off the dying/infected tissue with a toothbrush. Once clean, put a few drops on tincture of iodine, let it sink in for about a minute then, rinse it in the container water and...
  5. RO/DI

I disagree, the DI portion is usually more trouble than it's worth. A good RO unit will take out the lion's share of bad stuff. A good thriving refugium will zap the other stuff a DI filter would get. Save some money, get the Kent Hi-S RO unit. Very good!
  6. Request for photos

Reefmon, If you give me an email in a pm I can send you all my pics. You can check them ot at: http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/nellieusmc/l ... %26.view=t BTW, I am a WAMAS member. See you at the reeftank on the 7th
  7. What is this and how to control it?

It's dinoflagellates. Siphoning will help, but something triggered it like a dead organism, or an ammonia, phosphate spike. Have you recently added any new liquid supplements? In my experience, these blooms are strictly nutrient driven.
  8. (MyReef) Nilsen reactor update

Silly question... I'm not familiar will nilsen rxtrs. How do you control effluent parameters, to ensure Ca, Alk, pH are where you want them to be in the reef? In what ways are nilsen rxtrs better/worse than calcium rxtrs?
  9. What size is yours?

90 and 120 gallon tanks flow into 80 gallon fuge at 2000 + gal/hr. Evap rate is 3-4 gallons per day. at 80 degrees. both tanks are open top.
  10. New pics update

I regret to inform you that all my anthias croaked over the course of 4 months. I think it was a combination of me not knowing how to properly feed them, and my green brittle stars nabbing them at night. specs: 120 and 90 plumbed to common overflow to 80 gallon sump/refugium/plenum. flow...

  12. E. quadricolor: type specimen

I think the latin name refers to the variety of ecomorphs that can be seen. Have you ever seen a rose BTA?
  13. Refugium ideas for a 200

My overall point is that you can plumb inlet flow without the need of splitting/reducing it through a refugium, provided you're not running a 10 gallon refugium on a 1500 gallon per hour pump. Inlet flow can be scattered by rock or diffuser walls, see link to my fuge...
  14. Refugium ideas for a 200

The way I would plumb things together would be for the reef to overflow to a sump in its stand. Then a pump pushes water to the refugium. You would have to make sure the refugium tank was at a higher height (waterline to waterline) than the reef, so that gravity would establish return flow to...
  15. Refugium ideas for a 200

One other possible fix is to set the acrylic up inside the house on its own stand as a separate display tank. Then you can plumb the two together, and have the acrylic set-up as a seagrass lagoon refugium full of inverts, urchins, etc... That way, you can display a completely different motif...
