  1. Algae ID

Could anyone ID this algae, and recommend a way to get rid of it. Tank parameters are all great. Phosphate - to low to read, Silicate - to low to read, Calcium 450, Alk - 13 DKH. The algae peels up pretty easy but grows back. siphoning is difficult as I loose a significant amount of my sand...
  2. Anyone out there have a sea hare???

Like many of other creatures the sea hair has a very bad survival record in the aquarium. My experience is you are pretty much buying it to watch it die. Therefore I think they should be avoided. Janets reef has a good pic of one. Here is the site. http://janetsreef.com/sea_hare.htm[/img]
  3. Emerald crab that doesn't eat bubble algae. what to do?

I agree that the emerald is hit or miss and in my experience mostly miss. Also I had one that got petty big and then I caught him chowing on my leather coral so I moved him to my FO tank. Personnally I have started avoiding all crabs.
  4. Calcium Reactor and Hair Algae

Thanks for the info RR. Do you know how you friend set the out put up? How did he get it into the skimmer?
  5. Calcium Reactor and Hair Algae

I have a 125 gl reef which I was using a self maid calcium reactor (can be seen on my home page) on. The reactor seemed to work well, keeping the calcium at 450+. I developed a bad case of hair algae and fought it for some time. All of my perameters were great. I was really stumped as to why I...
  6. Scissortail Goby??

I have 3 scissortails. They are very hardy and easy to keep pretty much eat what ever I feed. They school and stay together most of the time. Here is a pic.
  7. Help....Found this guy in my tank couple days ago.

Well, someone mentioned tree hugging in this thread... so if that's your bent, uh, then don't continue reading. I dread posting this because of the response I think I'll get, but here goes... We HAD a beautiful orange cauliflower coral. One morning, it was halfway in the rock, and half...
  8. Bristle Worm with 9 Lives?

The worms are regenerative. If a segment broke off for some reason, it could have regrown into a new individual. FYI- My husband tells me there have been discussions posted about keeping bristleworms in tanks. The reading I've done ("The Reef Auqarium", by Delbeek and Sprung) does indeed...
  9. Are flatworms good or bad?

Some info from "The Reef Aquarium" by J. Charles Delbeek and Julian Sprung: First, any of the negative impacts they discuss are with respect to corals (which you said you don't have). Second, flatworms are not uncommon in a new tank, and once conditions stabilize, they may go away. If it's an...
  10. Hair alge

I'm not agreeing or diagreeing with others just want to say that up front. I'm just talking from my experience. I have a 125 gl reef with about 250Lbs of LR. The only thing more live rock does is give the alge more places to grow. I have 50-60 hermits and 70+ snails, 4 sallie light foots and...
  11. Hair alge

Hair alge is one of those things that varies from person to person. I know I have battled it over the past year in my 125gl reef and all my perameters are optimal. You will get tons of advise on how to control it and reasons for having it, and most of the time they will not get anything but...
  12. Reef tank pests?

I know flat worm and this is not a flat worm.
  13. Reef tank pests?

Can you tell us about these "pests"- what are they? are they harmful? how can we be rid of them? These critters have multiplied just recently in our tank (probably into the hundreds), never seen before. They remind me of an oat flake- except the center stripe is white and the outer flesh is...
  14. Getting rid of Ich

If you are wanting to stay away from medications you can also try lowering the salinity. This is done gradually over a few days to allow tank inhabitants to adjust. If no fish are in the tank then you could raise the temp along with the lower salinity. This is very affective in getting rid of...
  15. DIY calcium reactor. Single pass or recirculating?

If you would like to build your own reactor here is a site with the plans for the one I built. http://www.animalnetwork.com/fish2/aqfm/1998/mar/features/2/default.asp It works very well. Here is a picture of it.
