Not sure if you can swap out for the lower wattage bulbs. I don't think 250W is overkill for any tank unless it's a nano. I used this unit on a 46 gallon with great success. As long as you slowly acclimate your corals to light this intense they would be fine. I did this acclimation by placing...

:bump: $400 for the fixture. Has 2 phoenix 14k bulbs touching 12 months old and one of the t5 bulbs is about 6 months old and the other is brand new not even installed yet.

They were not an overkill for my tank which had mostly sps. I used a fan to keep it cool. There is one picture in the link above. LMK
