  1. enter stage left: BRYOPSIS

I've had a few patches of bryopsis pop up here and there but it sounds like the rock you got has more than I've dealt with. I ised Flame*Angel's method of bryopsis removal and it works really well. It's probably a step you could take before you have to nuke the whole rock. Basically, you pull...
  2. SQWD Owners....

I'm really happy with my SCWDs. On my 50 gallon, I running two off a 1.5" manifold from a Quiet One. Despite the inherent flow reduction from the devices, I'm seeing good flow 18-20" from each output. I'm not using any prefilter in the sump or on the pump, and nothing has gotten jammed up...
  3. Water level in overflow higher all of a sudden

Yeah, if there's a filter bag on the sump inlet, then it might be clogged creating a little back pressure. My water level rises a lot when I feed particulate matter to the tank. Go figure.
  4. Corals need ID or experience

Hi everyone. I was hoping someone could point me in the direction of a correct ID for three corals and what kinds of prices they're seeing for them. The first two were unidentified and I kno wthe difficulty of IDing Montipora cap's. I've read the reefkeeping article, so maybe I'm just looking...
  5. Sump Design Question - Evaporation Point

I think the question is where will you see the effects of evaporation with respects to water level. Of course water will evaporate wherever there's unsaturated air interface, but yes you'll see the effects over the whole sump untill the water level drops to the 10" baffle, then you'll only see...
  6. I'm sorry, I need some light advice

Right now I don't have anything in between the water and VHO's but I'll make a new canopy to accomodate the MH fixture. Are there wider reflectors that would help distribute the light across the tank? For the canopy, I was planning on creating a open back with top ventilation and fans to...
  7. I'm sorry, I need some light advice

Thanks for the quick replies. There is no center brace. I bought the tank used and the previous owner removed the center brace. Thanks for the link. I'll start digesting the information. When You say raise the 400 W up a bit, is that more than the standard 8-10 inches? I'm sure I'll...
  8. I'm sorry, I need some light advice

Hi. I've been running my 50 gallon breeder (36x18x18) for three years now under (3) 95 W VHO's. I have some soft, LPS, and one Acro and everything is doing okay. I would like more confidence with SPS's and would like to switch to Metal Halides. Having read through 16 pages of the search...
  9. Vendor Feedback: Christian Schwalm, SkyLab Industries

The craftsmanship looks good and customer service sounds great. One thing though... aren't those bulkheads on backwards? I like to have my gaskets on the wet side.
  10. Elbow before the return pump?

I'm redesigning my sump system for my 55 breeder and decided to go with a blueline pump for my return. It has 0.75" in and out. My question is this: I've seen closed loop systems with a 90 degree elbo right before the pump, so due to area constrictions, I was wondering if I could go out of my...
  11. RO for the impoverished

I purchased a 5 stage ro/DI from Airwaterice.comfor 139.00 on Monday. I should have gotten it today, but something is screwy with UPS. It seems good as they use Filmtec membranes from Dow, but the DI seems smaller than other units (2.5 x 11 inches). I'll probably purchase ome bulk DI and...
  12. refractometer best price?

Hey Lunchbucket, I think North Coast Marines http://www.northcoastmarines.com/refract.htm has the best price at 80 bucks if you can't find it for less on Ebay.
  13. Salt water pond project

Sounds like a cool idea. The only problem that crossed my mind is the evaporation. I would think that a pond has a higher surface/volume ratio that a normal tank and in a greenhouse might be evaporate more readily. What are your plans to combat this? I'm not sure how much it rains in...
  14. Sump Propagation?

I have a vew frags in my sump refugium. The way I made my sump, I have two inputs so I can adjust the waterflow independenly to the two parts. I just placed an eggcrate platform in the refugia for to place the frags on and light it with three 13W PCs from AHsupply and it's working wonderfully.
  15. Sump Outlet

I think first you have to at least have the hole the height of your external pump intake, plus any silencing devices you're going to have underneath it (the pump). Of course, you can avoid all that if you use flexible piping from the sump to the pump. Second, you might not want to have the...
