green star polyps losing their arms

I've had this happen several years ago in my tank. Now I'm trying to get my tank floor and rocks carpeted with green star polyps. I've been noticing that some of the poylps arms are missing or halved, but the mat is still growing. Is this normal or is this a sign of predation?

Welcome to reefs.org, Isplitte. I've never had a similar problem, but I would guess it could indeed be predation. However, it's certainly possible that there may be someone else who's had such trouble and found it to be by another cause.
