Dr Ron,

I feel a little embarassed asking about this...

There is this urban legend over here in Oz, and maybe in the US, too, that suggests that there is a species of polychaete that has the taste for silicone and will burrow into the joins on a tank causing it to leak.

After reading through the material on locomotion and nutrition for polychaetes, I find the whole notion quite far fetched. I have seen polychaetes living between the glass for my overflow and the tank wall, but this was in an area where there was no silicone to start with.

To me, the whole thing sounds like an excuse by LFS to either explain why their badly made tanks leak, or talk people out of sand beds.

Can you please share your views?

Hi Andrew,

Gad!

LOL!

I presume that if the silicone is poorly applied some worms might be able to burrow into it, but otherwise it ain't gonna happen!
