http://www.ReefBuilders.com just launched a new forum for verified industry members... check out the post...

http://www.reefbuilders.com/2009/08/19/ ... /#comments

Here at Reef Builders we obsessively cover the saltwater industry. We have been for a while now and we like to think we do a good job at it. A ton of people read us every day for the latest scoop on new products, news and rumors. And we try our best to bring you relevant, accurate information for you to enjoy every day. We get a lot of Local fish store owners, manufacturers and vendors reading the site besides the thousands of hobbyists who read us and maul us at shows (we like it seriously). Today we are launching something I am personally excited about. So, what is it?

Scanning over this industry I didn’t really find a place where people affiliated with the industry have a place to connect. Today we are releasing the the Saltwater/Reef Industry forum that is located here on Reef Builders. It is the first forum of its kind that is verified with those that participate. There are some factors that you’ll have to meet before you are granted access. And not just anyone can join. Who is encouraged to join?

-Local Fish Store Owners
-Commercial Businesses
-Vendors/Manufactures
-Professional Hobbyists
-Importers/Wholesalers

How do I start?
First register for a Reef Builders Forum account. You’ll need to use your real first and last name. Then, like I mentioned you’ll need to be verified of your credentials. You can do that one of two ways which are very simple. You can either send me an email with your contact information or send a message through our contact system. Be sure to include your username on the forum that you registered with (if you haven’t already) so that account will have access to the new Industry forum.

What Next?

After that, you won’t have to worry about a thing. Your account will have access and you’ll be able to start mossey-ing around the industry forum without any problems. My thought with all of this is to have a easier place for people related to the industry to connect. Hopefully with your help, this will be a success for those that live off of this industry.

Sorry Wayne, their checking credentials at the door :D

I signed up for it yesterday, hoping it is a place where "industry" types can feel a little more free discussing things where it cant be viewed by the general public.

With a little luck Wayne will keep his promise.

What is a professional hobbyist?

Dunno, but if it's predicated on the amount of time and money spent in this hobby I'm qualified :P

"What is a professional hobbyist?" Jake(sorry Jake had to do it)

I haven't signed up, but I figure its mostly bickering and drama, and I could use some entertainment. I'll get on eventually.

Nothing of the sort (bickering and drama).

Thanks for the info, Gresh.

I only see a couple of threads there so far, but it could turn into an interesting place.

"What is a professional hobbyist?"

I'll bite, as it's a label I've used to describe myself ;) Professional Hobbyist = Former industry member turned hobbyist because a) the industry is so darn cutthroat and b) getting paid $7, $9, or $12/hr for my time just wasn't enough to buy a house, get married, or raise a family with, and c) may still contribute to the industry and hobby in other capacities not directly though of as being an "industry member", i.e. such as an author or speaker. Some other folks I might consider as "professional hobbyists"? Sanjay immediately comes to mind, and while he's never been in the industry as far as I know, he's certainly a professional and a hobbyist.

Or, how about the ones who need to get a job in the trade to pay for their habit?

The ones that hangs out on 104 every Sunday morning :D
In partial defense of 104th St., and unless something has changed in the past couple of years, 104th St. was a ghost town on Sunday mornings when I used to work there. Everyone knows I have, in the past, had issues with some people on 104th but many folks just assume things that aren't even remotely true. I also never understood why people assume 104th is whoresaler central in Los Angeles. I can count on one hand the number of wholesalers on 104th. There are many more spread throughout the basin with much worse ethics and husbandry practices.

Maybe I'm just getting old but this **** is getting really old.
