Should non-native corals be farmed in open sys? Why or not?

Heh, good question Dizzy. So if the places you cited don't "belong" there, then what about hobbyists. Should hobbyist's tanks be not allowed within 5 miles of the beach in Florida? Afterall, it's the hobbyists that are getting blamed for the lionfish releases in FLA and NC.

Eric: Thanks very much for stopping by and giving us the info!

Cheers

I'm with you James,
But hobbyists should then be banned if they are a days drive from the shoreline, not just 5 miles.
Only people in Kansas should be allowed to keep fish.

Hobbyists don't generally have open systems. An educational program highlighting the problem of RELEASING your cherished babes would probably accomplish heaps

You obviously watched Nemo

All drains in houses flush masses of freshwater (sinks, showers, toilets) that eventually go to the sea.

If your saltwater coral can handle the osmotic shock, it deserves to take over the world.

Interesting little blurb in the Coral Reefs issue from December.
(Just got my copy on Saturday.)

Talks about non-native corals arriving off the coast of Brazil.
They *think* it might be bio-fouling from oil rigs, but are not sure.

Both non-photosynthetic as I recall as well.

Regards.
