MACO's gearing up for 2004. They should be posting an update at any time.

I was wondering the same thing Chucker -- why it was posted in this forum. ;)

Although the two replies contradict one-another, both replies contain the question "why it was posted [ here / in this forum ]"...

Well the straight answer to "why it was POSTED on the forum" is quite simple: to find out what the status is of MACO [and its online lessons]!

So it took at least two posts to get a simple(?) answer.

Mind you there was also a free(?) , out of the blue , online algebra(?) lesson...

MAC <> MACO or should that be MACO <> MAC, since the question was about MACO???

Now [ Chucker ] I don't understand why that insert was necessary. Nowhere was MACO=MAC implied in my simple question.

And [ Chucker & "liquid" ] to offer a conment to the implied(?) innuendo in "why it was posted HERE / in THIS forum"... that my question should not have been asked on this "Industry Behind The Hobby" forum: Are the "industrious" people who are behind MACO not part of the "game"? Does the link to MACO not show up on http://reefs.org/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=35 , the "home" of this forum...

Why oh why does it seem that some days NOTHING is simple here???

Meanwhile - well past Thanxgiving - I shall keep an eye out for an update from "Mac-OH"...

So long.

If you had really wanted an answer to that question you would have gone to the MACO site and asked it on their board. Asking it here appeared trollish. So the benefit of the doubt was given in that you might have had MACO confused with MAC.

For the record I took a class earlier this year and was very happy with it (other than Scott Michael falling asleep watching TV and forgetting about us one class :) ). I know several people who took the DIY classes from Brian Ferguson and were thrilled with the end result and the instruction.

The "If you had REALLY wanted an answer to that question ..." makes me truly wonder what sort of nose Rover has for sniffing out reality.

For that matter one must wonder how such a comment is in the remotest way helpful. "If you had REALLY wanted" is no doubt the most helpful phrase a person can use...

Let's see, what else:

TROLL; a supernatural creature of Skandinavian folklore variously portrayed as a dwarf or a giant living in caves or under bridges.
Rumored to spread pepper on its trails ... BUT does not fish with cyanide.

Thanx Techno-shaman. That helps!

Was there any information in these classes about "sodium cyanide"?
And what does DIY mean? [ Do-It-Yourself ? ]

I hope these simple questions are not off-limits here...

FWIW, I took your original as a Troll too. The inclusion of the poll was what set off the radar....

And if you really don't know what a troll is yet, click the link above. - Here, I'll repeat it..

Because, as I stated, Marine Aquarium Council and Marine Aquarist Courses Online have nothing to do with each other, so that'd be a "no." It's run by Bill2, liquid, and Chaotic Reefer, three of the folks from here at www.reefs.org. That, and there is a whole section of forums dedicated to MACO on this board, including one for Q&A about MACO, hence my question why it was posted here.

As far as I can see, it doesn't.

Hi Mr. Advantage,

Since you're probably reading this post, it seemed like a good place to introduce myself.

My name is James Wiseman - what's your name? I'm an ocean engineer who lives in TX. I am also an avid aquarium hobbyist.

I would be delighted if you'd introduce yourself to our group.

Cheers

Just as a FYI: if you refer back to the entire announcement on MACO's website you would have seen:

Fall Session: Posted by: maco2003 on Thursday, September 25, 2003 - 09:58 PM GMT

We would like to announce our courses for the fall session have been postponed. Our instructors have recently had some family concerns and we felt it would be best if they concentrate on their families. Meanwhile, the MACO crew has been working hard to prepare for next year and it is shaping up to be a great year. Many of the great courses we offered this year will be repeating next year. If you did not get a chance to take the course you wanted to look for it next year. Our next year's course catalog will be announced around Thanksgiving so keep an eye out then for our new offerings. Thank you and if you have any questions feel free to email [email protected].

MACO Admins

Bill provided an email address for questions in case anyone was wondering what was up with class offerings for 2004. MACO also has a series of forums and by clicking the Forums link you would have found 3 forums where you could have asked your question for a much more direct answer. Bill doesn't get on this particular forum much since he spends his time more on the MACO site and he's the one that's running our online courses.

Just so you know, I nor Chucker/James are flaming you at all. We were just a little confused why the question was posted here instead of either in our Feedback forum or on the MACO website or by emailing MACO directly. We thought that maybe you mistook MACO for MAC or vice versa. ;)

Are the "industrious" people who are behind MACO not part of the "game"?

MACO is Marine Aquarium Courses Online. Classes that are taught there are Do It Yourself classes (Acrylic Fabrication), fish biology, coral biology, lighting selection, etc and the people that teach these classes do not really participate in this forum. This forum is more for discussing industry issues -- MAC, cyanide use, net training, wholesaler/retailer issues, etc.

Anyhow, I hope that answers some of your questions...

Thanx Shane/liquid for that very helpful post. I really appreciate it as I know how much time it takes to hammer together a "complete" answer.

Yes indeed I had seen the entire "September 25" by "MACO Admins" ( Is that "Bill"? ).

I hope one and sundry will forgive me for bungling thru some of this stuff, as I have basically been using the REEFS.ORG site -=- which is great by the way -=- to try and get as much perspective as I can about current issues and information that is at hand there.

Having started at www.reefs.org on the forum "Industry behind the hobby" essentially by way of the Monte Carlo method, and liking the lively debate I saw, I certainly am open to constructive suggestions on where-else I might find useful information!

Thanx again Shane. I will have to revisit this whole thread and see what else needs to be responded to.

YOW! I have discovered the boolean booboo that I committed.

Whereas my original post was the PRIMARY question: "Is MACO dead? ", I also included a subordinate question, which unfortunately was phrased such that it was antipodal to the main question.

THEN , when I received the initial responses to the new thread, with the
"[ Poll ] Is MACO dead?", it didn't register that i had asked that subordinate question.

I went with the "Is MACO dead?" The reply responses did not contain the
SUBJECT, nor did they reference the subordinate question.

Hence the subsequent posts ( on my part )... I got fooled by my own "ambiguity" and the next steps!

I apologize to Chucker & liquid for suggesting a contra-diction. Then of course I got sidetracked by their common comment...
And so it goes / went...

Still:

A straight-shooting son of a gun
I said a straight-shootin' son of a gun"

Glad we got that cleared up.

As am I... Often the devil is in the detail. A lot is to be said for clarity!

To be honest I was flabergasted by some of the - in my view - uncalled for responses...

I'm ready to move on, and would like to ask the next STRAIGHT question.

Ready?

PS I see that again, the THREAD SUBJECT was left behind in the "plain reply". I tend to use the "Quote" button, as it will incorporate the text at hand in the message. Then where needed one can copy in the Subject. THAT certainly adds to clarity. Some other forums I am on do this by default... :)

DIY , yes that is accepted acronym - carries over to more than just the reef world.

And yes we delved fairly extensively into fish collection methods in the reef fish class I took with Mr. Michael and he gaev us some background as well as a lot of food for thought about it's use and perception of Cyanide collection.

For a good idea this particular forum is most enlightening if you do a few searches - topics have been beat to death with input from both people in the industry as well as those residing in some of the countries where cyanide collection is still an issue.

Good luck.
