File fish reef safe?

Fist of all what kind of file fish is it?
And is it reef safe?
I have seen him pick at so e softies and leathers but no damage at all.

it's a spotted file fish and it's not reef safe. it basically eat sps polyps.

The Green file or Bristletail file will eat them but you need to be careful as some will also eat zoas.

+1 fortunately mine ate the aptasia first, but then started on the zoas!

i have had 2 green filefish.what i havent read about them is after they have nothing left to eat that will sustain him it will die.sure it will eat mysis and cyclopeeze but i dont believe it can survive for a long period of time eating those foods.both mine lasted 6 months almost to the day and then poof gone

There's a thread on RC http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1695421 about these fish. It seems people are having success weaning them onto a variety of prepared foods, but no one has yet kept them alive for longer than 14 months. Possibly due to nutritional deficiency.

I've kept these filefish for years just eating mysis and pellets. They are real hardy fish. I have a thread on here somewhere showing the pairs I have laying eggs.
