what is this? it forms a hard maroon colored tube that is spiraled at the bottom. looks like a tube worm, but i never see a crown coming out day or night.

it;s a barnacle type worm - they should come out at night.

It could also be a Vermetid snail, a type of sessile snail. You don't seen a tube worm crown because they don't have one. Some cast out sticky nets to snare food.

vermetid snail is right. i have seen strands of white stuff coming out of them on occasion.

they can get to a decent size if they are healthy. I used the Marc Weiss Blackpowder a few times and right after I started using it I noticed these guys all over the tank as well as some other freaky stuff popping up out of nowhere.
