On my live rock, there is this tube-like structure. I often see what appear to be to tiny antennae coming out of it, but I don't see anything else. Whatever it is it keeps expelling this web-like schmootz. Any idea what I'm dealing with here?

I looked up vermetid snail and that's certainly what it sounds like. Apparently it makes the web to catch it's food and then pulls the web in to eat what it caught. I guess I should stop removing the webs it makes! Thanks for the info. I'm glad it's nothing to worry about. I am more and more amazed the deeper I get into reef keeping!

+1 Vermetid Snail

They are semi-reef safe. The mucus "web" that they extrude is indeed how they filter feed, but it also stings corals. Anytime I get them hitchhiked into my system, I leave them alone unless they are close to a coral. If it is near the coral, I just put a dab of super-glue on the tip so the web can't some out; Therefore starving and killing it. HTH

That't good to know. I didn't realize it could sting coral. Can't we all just get along! It's not near a coral, but the web can go quite far. I will keep an eye on it to make sure my corals aren't being damaged. Also, what kind of super-glue do you use? Is there an "aquarium-safe" one?

They do not sting corals.
The reason people may not like them around coral is that they could blocking food from the coral. Sometimes these worms get out of hand and people glue them shut so that they don't take over the tank.

I was beginning to wonder if they sting. The web gets all over my trumpet coral, but it does not seem to be bothered by it. I will leave it alone for now. I am not one to intentionally kill a living thing so hopefully it won't become a nuisance.
