The return doesn't need to be physically attached to the tank. If the tank is shaped like a donut, the return can be free standing and come up through the hole.

Draining the water into the sump is a little trickier, but nothng that a little engineering couldn't overcome.

Looks like there are two holes drilled in the center overflow box for return plumbing, along with a single larger drain hole.

Why not add a series of platforms that alternate up and down and put live rock, or corals on them. kind of like a merry-go-round for fish with an ever changing view

That's an interesting idea but perfecting this technology to be reef safe, tank crack safe, mechanical fail safe could be a tough and never ending task.
