Hey Ry, I just saw this thread. I'm so sorry to hear about all this. We've talked about those three fish so many times I feel like they were friends of mine too :(

Kathy has been giving you great guidance (as usual).

No mention of any carbon being run. Yes? No? I can't remember. If not, lets get some going in there asap.

A drop of temp to 76 shouldn't kill those guys overnight. Might, and I say MIGHT very strongly have stressed them a bit, but kill them? I wouldn't think so.

Again, so sorry......

Russ

Russ thanks man. Yes to carbon running, I have in a large 3 gallon reactor half carbon, half phos removal with a mag 5 on it. Although I'm thinking it may be time to change it, few months old. The temp thing, i figure 76 still is not that much. I just don't understand and would love to figure this out to prevent it from happening again.

Guarda, thanks. No power issues and yes I stated there was a power drop. From 79 to 76. It's not an extreme amount, so I figured its not that, although i do not know how fast it happened because I was sleeping.

RY, sorry to hear about your the loss of your friends. Hopefully you can find the reason why it happened so suddenly. Silly thought, do you have any little ones running around that could have put something in the tank? I caught one of my girls putting apple juice in the sump, thank god I got to her before she emptied the whole box.

Russ, I just cleaned the carbon out and will be picking up some esv carbon when i stop by. And what the heck are you doing up at 4:20 in the morning?! You said you can't do it anymore being on here all night because of your back! Haha

Imfernost, I have a 10 year old sister, but she knows better. She loves the tanks and is smart enough to follow the rules. I'm pretty sure she knows better. Good thought though, thank you.

Pdnyc69 I believe my oxygen level should be enough, can't guarantee it though. What do you mean by the skimmer bubble maker slowed down bubbling through a partial clog? You mean my skimmer pump get clogged a bit? If it has to do with my skimmer, it runs strong all the tank. My tank relies off my skimmer pretty much. Pulls out over a gallon of skim mate every week.

Guarda I cannot say if it did or not. My guess would be no because i have one of those Rena smart heaters, and you can easily see the top of the heaters big knob and it blinks real bright when the temp drops, I only noticed it blinking around 9 in the morning. Now I cannot guarantee it dropped, but I don't see how it could of. My heater is not that old and it's a 300 watt turned almost down all the way. I mean there is a chance...but I've turned my heater off awhile back and after 4 hours it dropped only 5 degrees. I went to bed around 2 and woke up around 9 that night. I don't think there was a lot of time for the temp to drop that low and go back up ya know. But you are right, i cannot guarantee that. Good thinking. Thanks

Now that a few hours have passed, do you see any improvement from changing the carbon?

As for 4:20 this morning.....well....that's still pretty much the normal

See you soon,
Russ

Well for an update...

9am is this morning, grouper had stress colors and hiding

I went out during the day

At 3:30 I looked at the tank... And... Lets just say it was kind of easy to take a picture of the grouper upside down in front of the glass :irked:

Ugh. I am furious. What is going on?!?! why can't I figure this out? 3 fish dead in 2 days when nothing is wrong!?!? Like I said a rarely kill fish, and now 3 in 2 days? Something is not right here.

And I took a picture of the grouper dead. It was alive at 9 in the morning, and at 3 o'clock I saw it ... 6-7 hours i was away from the tank, and the grouper looks just like the trigger did. He looks disgusting. All faded white, fins distroyed, deteareating... With on a few hours?! How. Seriously, how?

I'd post the picture, but kind of graphic, not horribly, but wanted to ask if its ok to post before I do. I mean its just a dead fish but still... Maybe someone take a look and see if they can figure anything out from it?

Again, so sorry Ryan.
Yes, posting it is for the best at this point. It is probably one of the strongest clues we have as to what is going on in your tank.

Not the greatest pic but here it is...

IMAG1086.jpg

Like I said this fish was fine and a few hours later looked like that? What the heck?

All faded white face, eye is bright white cloud. Fins are pretty much gone. And when i saw him this morning, just a little stress color, that's all

Sorry to hear about your tank. From the pic it looks as if the fins are clamped, hard to really say. Did you add anything to the water the night before, that looks like some of the fish I've seen when people decide to use expired stress coat. The only other thing I can guess is that mayb the food was weird or there was a big fight.
