k, got it. BB with no sump = a skimmer is essential. can anyone recommend me a good skimmer for a 45 gal SFOWLR?

and, hmm... i suppose that " liquid reactor" additive they put out don't really work... has anyone tried or is anyone usin that stuff?

and where are all the people that have like foot deep sand beds? i'm surprised so many peeps here are pro-barebottom! i saw most BBs in the gal pics.

For a 45g thats sumpless a Remora or the newer Tunze skimmer would be a nice choice. Both of them are hang on the back skimmers that perform well. The remora is significantly cheaper than the Tunze though.

Since you are gonna be doing a FOWLR, a SSB(Shallow Sandbed) would be a good choice. Maybe around 2 inches of sand, as it would allow you to be able to keep smaller gobies and sand dwelling fish. A FOWLR is much more forgiving than a reef, No3 can be present in low numbers(If I remember right from what marrone said)60ppm should not be a problem.

A lot of the tanks are BB, but there are some very nice Sand bed tanks. To name two I've know and heard about theres PrattReef and Kedd.

was' the name of the asian guy that was known for his minimalist setups like 25 yrs ago?

Forget about the past, you should get to know the one now and it's me Wingo :icon16:
I used a whipser for 10G and share it with one of my 55G which has more than 30 fishes for 2 years until I got an Eheim from a MR member. No light, nor even a hood causing the only death of a butterfly fish jumping out of the tank. I don't know whether he was catching a fly or committing suicide due to over crowding. A very small air pump-shared too. The population now jump to 52 including new breeds. :banghead: :banghead:

That's also a goal I try to experiment with.

because my main interests are FW and FW shrimp

I need your advice on FW shrimps. I never breed them properly. Oh if you like some flower horns fry I can trade/give you(parents were having VERY BIG humps and quite a few markings but color is mostly green)

BB DSB or sandy bottom

they all work, it's a matter of approach, understanding, experience and of course style

I don't know what you could gain from this except for arguments based on opinion and personal expierience

I've had tanks (or cared for tanks) with each of these methods and they all work.

my person opinion is to have some sand on the bottom simply because I like the way it looks and I like the sand dwellers

hey wingo,

dang! did i read wrong - 30 fish in a 55 gal?? and now you're using a canister and hav 52 different breeds of fish in there? the old guy's philosophy was actually plenty of live rock, just alittle aeration, and a LOW biomass. so yeah you're the new version.

about fw shrimp, when i moved i lost most, including my very precious CRYSTAL REDS! i would suggest start with cherry red or amano, although in my experience even the crystal reds are productive once you give them some time and stability. are you familiar with the saltwater "sexy shrimp" they are about the same lil size and shy behavior. r u in queens? if you are in manhattan you can probably get from the petshrimp guy, dang i forgot his name. i think he still sells or at least ships them homebred out of his apartment. which fw shrimp do ya hav already? i've been scouting lfs for fw shrimp but no luck. i may have to resort back to aquabid in warmer weather. i love how fw doesnt require a gazillion things to get set up. right now i'm breaking the bank for my couple of new nano tanks in the works. are you a newbie too? i guess i'm a (re)newbie. where should i get my live rock from? i need to order 50-100 lbs. and im not rich!! i hate it. back to the fish and other pets livin better dan me

prepared for the blizzard?
