Actually it cuts very well. You should use nippers and cut along the row where you want it to end but cut the far end of the 'box' you want to cut and then snap it off with your fingers. It makes a cleaner cut that way.
You can also sand down the rough edges.
I find that putting the sandpaper on a clip board and then running the eggcrate back & forth over it is easiest.

Are you using it to keep your fish from carpet surfing?
Eggcrate really restricts a lot of light from getting into the tank :(

I am using it to keep the cat out. Fluffy is the only cat that I know of that likes to go swimming. And it will also keep our wrasse from jumping out when we get it. We have lost three wrasses that way. I am pretty sure that with the lights I buy from Jimmy, enough light won't be a problem.

:cat: :sigh:

Surprisingly none of my cats are interested in any of my tanks..I don't let them in the room where the SW tanks are since I just know one will try to go to sleep on one of the light fixtures = fried cat :(

Have you considered using a window screen kit. You cut the frame to tank size and then use 1/4" square pond netting in place of the screening? It allows the light in waaaaay better than eggcrate and keeps the fish in too.
Is Fluffy prone to sitting on top of the tank? Maybe a canopy would be a better choice?

Pic of :cat: please :)

No, she doesn't sit on top of the tank. She goes swimming in the tank and lays in the tub after we tank a shower and tries to get in the bathroom while we are taking a shower and she bats all of the water out of her dish. She likes water. We have a canopy. Just waiting for it to arrive here. I do hope that would keep her out.

Be careful with the snapping off with fingers part. I sliced open my thumb on a jagged piece of eggcrate doing this recently. I use pliars for the "snapping" now
