Remember when you were in school and you were wondring when you were ever going to use some of things in real life? I remember we made our own RO/DI system in chemistry class. We talked about the chemical reaction that was going on when the water passes through it and why it was better water for us to drink and shower in. We used that system all year to get all of water from for our experiments. I called my old science teacher and he is emailing me diagrams on how to build my own RO/DI system. He said that depending on the size, it should only cost about $75.00 to build. He said to let him know if I have any trouble getting anything on the list and he will hook me up with someone who will get it for me. I can't wait. Sometimes the things we learn in school come in handy.

I find it intresting the dyi project it igives you something to do
Well, having something to do while waiting (impatiently, I might add) for the tank to cycle has kept my mind off of going out and buying a fish just to see some life in there. I think Ryan is getting irritated because I had rearranged the house 3 times this past weekend.

I would like to see the plans also.
I like doing my own projects, mostly because you get what you pay for. If you spend under $100 on RODI system, chances are the quality will not be as good as the $300 model you really wanted.
So when it slows down or totally stops working you pay more to fix it than its really worth.

Cool class project, my teenage projects involving water and plumbing were more extra curricular.

No so sure you can built a simple 3 stage RO/DI with a $75 dollar budget, interesting to see never the less. I think $125 is more realistic.

Make sure you use standard housing for all the stages, otherwise finding replacement filters will cause bucks later..

You learned how to built a RO in high school? all I did was learn how to not get my butt sucked in by a turbine engine, which came handy a few times already :lol2:.

IME, most RO/DI sold for aquarium trade are about the same quality, the expensive ones have more "bells and whistles" like TDS meter, flush valve, auto shutoff solenoid, locking jacob fittings, booster pump, etc.. $300 for a RO/DDI is a bit pricey..

Some vendors' units are know to have bad assembly practice, causing a few leaks around the fittings that needs re-tightening.
