Hello everyone,
This is my first post here on Manhattan Reefs I have a question about Brightwells Neo Marine salt. The guy at my fishstore says its just as good as Tropic Marin Pro (Which I use Currently), but its 25 bucks cheaper....... if anyone has used it or knows anyone that has i would love your input.

I have a feeling salt is pretty much just salt. i just use whatever is cheapest...

Unfortunately that is not true. And unfortunately in this hobby cheapest is most often the worse path.

Each brand name, even batch of the same name brand mixes up different with different levels and parameters.

Always test your newly mixed water before adding it to a stable system.

IO, Reef Crystals, and Oceanic have always worked for me and are some of the cheapest brands I have come across. I have never understood why people pay a fortune for the "designer" stuff.

I just picked up some of this stuff today to try it out. I was told by the lfs it is close in quality to tropic marin. I'll let you know how it works out.

Thanks for all your input I ended up breaking down and buying some. This stuff dissolves really quickly.... in fact i recommend filling up your mixing container first then adding the salt. I did it the other way around and found it to be quite an aggresive reaction, more so then other salts that I have used (the bottom of the bucket got really warm almost hot to the touch). The corals seemed to love it, most of their polyps were fully extended after doing the water change.

I recently was pretty disappointed with the quality of a Brightwell's supplement. It was sent to me as a replacement for a Kent Magnesium supplement that was out of stock. The stuff, IMO, was pretty questionable in terms of quality. There was quite a lot of black 'goop' that came out of the container at the bottom. Also, there were clearly a lot of nutrients of one type or another as I had a pretty good bloom of algae after dosing a tank with the stuff. This product should be mostly (as it says on the label) magnesium sulfate and magnesium chloride. I've picked up bulk quantities (cheap) of these chemicals and mixed them up myself that were much higher quality (no algae blooms, and mixed up clean with no significant residues). Since actual salt mix uses quite a lot of MgCl2 and MgSO4, if Brightwell uses the same source of chemicals for their salt mix....I'd steer WAY clear of the stuff.

I use the powder brand of brightwell's mg, ca and alk 8.3 as well as their kalk and I have to say I love the stuff. I've never used the liquid kind though.

Brightwells NEOMARINE Salt is a Low Nutrient System Salt. Its levels are for true ocean levels and has a lower alkalinity. Its suppose to compete with KZ Reefer's Best Salt as well as GTA Formula 2 Salt. I believe it is meant for the NEOZEO system. Becareful about switching over to this if your system is not a ULNS. If you do switch, do it very slowly like 5% a week over 8 weeks. Look over this link for more info:
