In my letter I pointed out that this bill will only increase the amount of animal smuggling that already goes on. Same thing happened when CITES banned importation of collected slipper orchids...since they couldn't be exported for propagation, a newly invigorated black market ended up causing many species to become nearly extinct, yet propagated specimens, which would have reduced or eliminated demand for wild ones, were completely illegal....

you guys see this?

Hello all,

There is currently a Bill that will be presented to congress which, if passed, will have a HUGE negative impact on not only the aquarium trade, but all pets. The bill plans to outlaw importation of non-native species with an undisclosed list of exceptions. IF made law, due to it's broad and vague wording, this law would be horrible for all aspects of the pet trade (retail, wholesale and consumer) including pets such as dogs, cats, birds, small animals such as hamsters and guinea pigs and of course the aquarium trade.

Go to the web-site below to send an e-mail to your representative to say you do NOT want this bill signed into law.

This has been discussed all over forums. Here's a link that may calm some nerves.

"The majority of bills and resolutions never make it out of committee."

And with the final step being that the President needs to sign it into law, know this: Obama's dog is a Portuguese water dog, a breed that you can say not native to the US. Are they going to make him get rid of the dog? What, the US President breaking a law he himself signed? I say a lot of us are over-reacting until we see this bill go any further than where it is now.

:lol2: Every new article I read on this topic makes it seem more certain than the last that pet keeping is doomed. This last one doesn't even mention an "approved list" :tired:

Thanks for moving my post to appropriate place!

What scares me most is how fast they passed the non-human primate bill.

I'm going to the fish store tonight!!
