I am replying to a VERY old post here, but I thought it was relavant to a lot of recent discussions.

Rent on an office in Manhattan can range anywhere from $3,500 plus. A store front in a BAD spot starts at $5,000. In Washington Heights for a second floor store off Broadway (above the stores you see walking down the street) they wanted to charge me $5,000! So imagine a GOOD neighborhood with decent traffic, easy access to transportation and add to this the cost of the insane electric rates, heating, employees and add to this the Bloomberg taxes- parking tickets and just about any other ticket or fee that Bloomie can think of.

I also thought the prices were very high, but the service was good and friendly, the shop was clean, well stocked and everything was set up well and HEALTHY. At New World the owner is that "British guy" (or Indian?) that is nasty and never has anything nice to say that is not said sarcastically. So when I give it thought, the prices really are not that high considering what we get for our money.

Just yesterday my dad took back some frags that had bleeched and they replaced them with even nicer and bigger frags!

Just to remind people complaining about prices at LFS's in NYC, the stores are paying NYC rent!!! Rent for a small shop can be anywhere from 5k to 20k so don't knock them for having to charge more. It's amazing to me that people can even open an aquarium store in new york anymore. I give big props to Joe for running such a great business.

I was looking for a place in the city and the only one I found was new world aquarium, it was a big jump in price over the place I go to in brooklyn, but they have frags for sale, as opposed to buying $85 and up pieces in brooklyn. I never bought livestock from them cause of the high prices, I've never had a bad experience with any of the dudes there either.

I went looking again and came across NY Aquariums which I loved the layout, very clean, very nice, the stingrays in the pond was awesome, but the prices were way more ridiculous compared to New world, so I've never been back.

I wish there was a decent place with decent prices tho :(
