if you would like to not hard boil livestock try using a ranco electronic temp controler with 2 100 watt heaters. the controler will regulate heat better then the crap regulators on the heaters, and if you have 2 heaters you will have a back up if one craps out.

get a temp controler. either single or dual. Dual will turn something on if the temo goes up (fans or chiller) and the single will just turn the heater on or off depending on the temp. Ranco makes a reliable one, make sure it calibrated properly

Reliable heater... I don't think they exist.

I have used Jager, Won Pro, Finnex, Visitherm, and whole bunch more that I can't remember off the top of my head..... they all suck.

i had a 50watt visi-therm stealth heater in my 15 gallon nano .. and it cooked some of my acros too .. i had the temperature set at 75F, but it heated my tank up to 88F ... it was a very said day. I took out the dead corals and buried them with the crappy heater.

=Always use 2 heaters...to make up your total wattage needed for your tank to maintain a proper temp. This way if one fails....and believe me it will...it will not cook everything. In addtion, ranco controllers are top notch and highly recommended...go with a duel....can always kick on a chiller or fan....and now you can sleep at night...well sort off....:splitspin

I'm setting up a 175gal. tank with a 30gal. sump, what would be the best option to go with, I saw that Finnex makes an 800watt heater that is rated for that total water volume, but not to many other brands go up that high. Do I need two 800watt heaters and a dual ranco controller to be safe, or can I go with 2 300 or 400 watt heaters? Also if anyone has one of those ranco controllers, is it capable of handling 2 heaters, a chiller and a fan?

IME FInnex is the worst heater I have ever used. I had the 800 watt, and it died within a month. I sent it back and they sent me a new one, it died wihtin two weeks. I haven't bothered to send it back- not worth the postage. Not to mention the 150 w (I think) that lasted me three months.

Ditto
We are actually a vendor that carries Finnex. Our website NO LONGER displays them. We will not order them for customers that demand them and know we carry that line. It's not worth the hassle for us to honor returns/warranties/phone calls/aggravation. If I had to guess a % failure on Finnex heaters, I'd put it in the 80% range (this is my guess and not a scientific study).

I like the Jager heaters too.
