So I was trying to get a siphon going and inadvertently took a big gulp. It stung my throat so bad I couldn't stop coughing. Even after a whole bottle of spring water I'm still mad thirsty right now. What do you do after you drink saltwater? I'm talking about taking a huge gulp like I did.

I would think milk might be soothing.
Were you trying to start a siphon on a U-tube? One of these might make your easier next time around..

I'm not flipping out. I just thought I'd start a "General Discussion" about it that's all. =)

You're right Kathy how'd you know? It's one of those things I've been procrastinating to come around doing.

Kathy - Where can we get those gadgets? I never knew about those and have been inadvertently swallowing nasty water for years.

A trip to the doctor folks, give me a break.

Paranoia.

As far as the U-tube is concerned, you don't even need to go to the trouble of adding the tube like Kathy suggested. IMO it is just adding a weak point for failure. Just snake the airline hose into the top of the bend, put the U-tube in place and suck the air out. You can leave a small bubble of air in the tube, so there is no need to get a mouth full of water. Then turn on your return pump.

Haha I knew this would facilitate an interesting and informative discussion, while bringing out the funny side out of you. I swallow saltwater all the time. I even tasted the water the first time I mixed saltwater (don't act like you didn't). Yeah it may sound silly, but I just feel like in an enclosed environment where your fish constantly pees to regulate osmosis if you swallow saltwater YOU ARE DRINKING FISH PEE! Hence the saying goes "don't drink water, fish pee in it", or in this case, saltwater. Anyhoo I digress.

In this hobby we all have tasted the fine water in our tanks. I was just wondering if it ever gave anyone any ill affect. I didn't think so but I'm bored at work so I thought I'd ask. Imagine flatworms or ich or bristleworms start growing in our stomach and eat the food we eat and start growing....

I think the stomach enzymes would be too powerful for flatworms and bristle worms. Remember their natural enviroment is a pH of 8.4 where as our stomach is about 6.2 when enzymes are introduced for digestion. Homeostasis would be a b1tch in my opinion.
