I keep having to change my filter socks every 3-4 days. they get clogged and the water backs up and comes out the top. also how does everyone clean their socks. it seems to take forever to rinse them out. has anyone tried putting them in the wash. it can't be that you have to keep buying new
socks, can it?

there is a thread somewhere in here.
It says people throw the socks into the wash with bleach. That they do this at least twice to get a 'decent' clean.

I try and hand scrub them, then soak in 5g bucket with light bleach (when I have it, which I usually don't have on hand). I don't clean them very often as I continously turn off my sump!

Also, a lot of people seemingly bulk buy socks. I can't tell you how many people I've seen with a pile of like 5-10 socks strewn around their fish area

I take mine out once a week and scrub it by hand I jsut hold it under the water upside down and rub it together I see all brown water and brown on the sides I keep rubbing all over until it is white again.

Come to think of it it really breaks my back doing it

I switch mine out every other day. I have six of them that I rotate. On the advice of Jim (House of Laughter, from the House of Fish), I throw mine into the washing machine with some oxyclean. Take them right out of the washing machine and into the tank. No problems.

A LFS stated if you throw them in your washing machine, regardless if you do an empty wash cycle after, washing your clothes afterwards will smell of your fish tank. I have a few new pairs of filter socks and I'm hesitant to try this now. Any opinions on this?
