Hello,

About 2 years ago I got this guy as a hitchhiker on a piece of coral from some North Atlantic waters.. he was small and initially I was going to kill him off as a nuisance.. However he has grown and peacefully coexists within my tank and we have now grown quite fond of him. I know that a Picture would be better BUT he is in the middle of a Very large tank and all pics just look undefinable so this representation is quite accurate.

Thanks for the comments guys

Hello,

Well it seems that an update is in order... a friend Shu Tin recommended that I research the family Edwardsiidae. It appears that there are 36 members of this family and that many come from North Atlantic seas? A more common name for her relatives is the "Starlet Anemone" even some in this group are something of "Mud Anemones" I did get a Balanophyllia colony from this same distributor about the same time that supposedly came from the waters around Scottland? I wonder if perhaps she could have HitchHiked on that colony rather than the one that I thought? anyway she is still quite interesting. Below is a link with a similar drawing... Tel me do you think this could be at least the correct family?

I am not sure how he got it from scottland?? I have never gotten anything from there.. is that a BAD place? When he traded me the Balanophylia I think that is where he said that it came from? or at least that that was where Balano come from? Dont know enough about it to be sure though?

I have had many Tube anemones and this is not the same.. This has no TUBE :) RON S at Marine depot was unable to ID it and were it a Tube anemone I would think that he could have IDed it :(

I do not Import corals .. I do not have cites... I am a home collector who people email and say hey I have "XXX" would you trade me for some micro? and I say cool But beyond that I ask people like you for better IDs :)

No not cold water... wish it was colder it averages about 76-80... I have no live rock from the Atlantic... I was told that a Balanophyllia colony had come or does come from the waters around Scotland... not sure which way he told it to me>? BUT the issue was about the anemone... Originally I thought it to come from the Pacific then when I found that much of the Family Edwardseii comes from the Atlantic I wondered is perhaps it had hitchhiked upon that colony? :)

I knew it wasn't Cerianthus filiformis so I just assumed it was borealis. Unfortunately I don't have my books to research it a bit (they're all in storage).

Don't know Edwardsiidae any good links anyone could post?

It's up to you to determin if you want to support smuggling or not by researching where your animals can and can't be exported from. Ignorance is no excuse!

Gresham :) I am not trying to be ignorant... Nor am I making excuses LOL I AM as you stated attempting to research this. As I stated it came as a Hitch hiker on some other corals.. First, I thought from the Pacific then when I was told the family name was Atlantic in origin I referred to the only piece of coral any vendor had ever mentioned possibly coming from that Atlantic region... I sent you a very friendly PM requesting your assistance in its ID, I asked your advice LOL You instead chastise me... Your tone is uncalled for :( I have wronged you in no way.

The greatest obstacle to discovery is not ignorance -- it is the illusion of knowledge
