FOWLR, no inverts to speak of. 3 Fish: cowfish, puffer, foxface. Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate 10. No aggression to speak of. I have a UV that I unfortunately did not realize was clogged, but which is now running again.

Long story short, got a new fish about a week ago, this morning my cowfish is showing signs of ich. Not terribly, but definitely there. Cowfish (not the new fish) is the only fish exhibiting signs. Eating fine, if not for the spots I wouldnt know anything is wrong.

Unfortunately (and I know this is said too often by everyone) I do not have the ability to run a hospital tank. The reason for this is I am getting married in 2 weeks, and will be going on a 7 day honeymoon. This basically means that my tank will not be getting a lot of attention over the next three weeks, and certainly not the attention that hospital tanks would require. So accepting that I am a stupid dumbass for not QTing (but please feel free to berate me) how should I handle this?

A. Keep up water quality, feed varied foods and hope that the newly unclogged UV and water quality allow the cowfish to fight off the ich and the other fish to avoid it. I am leaning towards this option initially.

B. Hypo the main tank. I have no inverts to speak of and no coraline on my LR. I could hypo, keep up water changes to deal with any die off from little LR critters, and keep the tank that way for a couple of months.

C. Use one of the useless Kick-Ich type medicines. I know these are worthless, but I would feel like I was DOING something.

D. Postpone the wedding and honeymoon so I can devote the necessary attention to set up a hospital tank.

E. Forfeit my fish-keeping license and give my fish away. Anyone too stupid to QT is too stupid to own a tank!

Thoughts? I am more interested on people's opinions on the problems I will encounter hypoing the main tank. I know its not ideal, and I'm not happy with myself, but I may as well try to do what I can.

I've handled ick before with fresh crushed garlic and running a uv light for a few days.It won't hurt anything -one time just approaching the tank you could smell the garlic and everything was fine after.

Doing nothing sounds like an excellent plan. I'll try some garlic too, cant hurt. Also I'll keep my fingers crossed. I'd ask marrone, but his dragon eels intimidate me.

Borrow a 10 gal tank and dose with copper for as long as you can before the wedding or if you can catch the fish you could try a fresh water bath to kill the attached parasites and hope the UV picks up the rest free swimming in the tank. fresh water baths are detailed on Bob Fenners web site (wetwebmedia.com)
These solutions are maybe a little on the radical side but they are worth considering.

If it doesnt improve I will give those a shot. Lol, wetwebmedia is incomprehensible, I get infuriated every time I try to read it.

Hi! I have an X in an X gallon tank <WAY too small. your fish will soon die>. I was wondering what kind of food I should be feeding X <please do WWM search under x>
Thanks!
<cheers>

Good point about wet web but apart from the coutless morons that write in looking for advice, there are step by step guides to fresh water baths and other useful stuff. I think they just need a web designer to help them out. Here's the link to the dip page:
http://www.wetwebmedia.com/dips_baths.htm
I have used the Methylene blue and fresh water treatment with success, however some fish really dont like the freshwater so its not a garanteed success.

Thanks for the link -- that may be useful. This morning the cowfish is still acting normal - i.e. eating a ton. Still has ich but looks better improved (I know this is basically meaningless but its better than it being worse). I fed some crushed garlic last night and this morning. I actually dropped in too much garlic this morning, but the fish seem to like it so I guess (hope) its not harmful.

I'm well aware of the toxins, IME cowfish just dont release that much. Of course, if he starts looking distressed I will get him out of there and into a temporary hospital tank. I can set up one, I think, but I wouldnt be able to set up and maintain 3 for 6 weeks to keep the main tank fallow.

A and try some garlic drops.

I picked up a 1" regal tang about a month and 1/2 ago. LFS said baby tangs aren't prone to ich so I put him in the main tank. Sure enough, he was showing signs of ich within a few days. 12 fish in the tank, none of them got it and it hasn't shown up on him in 2 weeks. Used garlic drops in varied food and that did it. Always an argument but I think if a fish is healthy it'll fight off ich without a problem.

Higher tank temps will increase the speed of the parasite... don't let the temp fluctuate of course. Higher tank temp will also increase the fish's metabolism and the garlic will help with the immune system.

I'm no expert but I over reacted about 5 months ago with some anthias and an angel that I thought were getting ich and wound up killing all 4 fish trying to hospitalize them. If I let them be they'd probably fight it on their own.

Just curious, how do you know is ich? It could just be some kind of parasite. Leave it alone.

There is only one (first) honeymoon, enjoy it. You don't need to worry about some fish.
