Hi!
Name's Jake and I just found your forum so I thought it'd be helpful. Moved to Long Island from Albany about 5 months ago. Just started a new 30 gal reef tank. I had a 100 gal Fish Only (FO) for about a year but was deployed to Iraq and the ex-wife killed everything in it. (Not the reason I got rid of her tho!)

I took the new wife to Jamaica and she fell in love with snorkeling so I suggested we start a Caribbean theme tank and that's why I'm back into it. Never had live rock before and I wanted to try coral. So here I am.

I hope to learn from all of your expertise and mostly from all of your mistakes! Lord knows I've made many, many mistakes myself over the years with all sorts of aquariums.

I'll be lurking!
Thanks everyone!

Thanks Everyone!

Thanks for the welcome. My wife has been looking at this site all evening and wants so badly to jump right in and buy every type of cool looking coral and fish out there. I have that same urge but know that slow and steady is the way to go with marine set-ups. We've only had it up for about a month now and everything seems to be doing really well.

We have lost 3 reef chromis but I expected that. My step-sons picked out the chromis and 1 striped damsel. I didn't put the damsel in the main tank. He's still in the QT cuz I've dealt with damsels before and know what a pain the rump they can be! Even in my old 100 gal tank where room to roam wasn't a problem the damselfish I had were a MENACE! :anger2:

I do have question for you fellow Long Islanders (I can't believe I said fellow LI's! My wife will laugh at that one! She tells me I'm from Canada cause I'm from Albany); do any of you use ocean water instead of mixing saltwater for your tanks? I live in West Babylon and the beach isn't far to go. I figure the best water to use would be real ocean water but not sure if that's realistic or not? What do you guys think???

Thanks again for the warm welcome and look forward to reading your responses and enjoying this incredible hobby.

Jake
