Hey all,

I started using phosban in my 72g reef. Started slow and am up to 100g for the past three weeks. My PH dropped from 8.1 to 7.9. I am not comfortable with the PH this low. Calc is 500, Mag. is at 1500, and Alk is about 8.5 . Nitrates at 10. Help with the Ph situation would be appreciated:scratchch

Alot of people find that when they start with phosban that it tends to lower their alkalinity somewhat.

Right now, your Calc and Alk are not in a proper ratio, and this is screwing with your PH. With calcium at 500, your Alk should be almost 19 in order to be properly balanced, according to this calculator.

For what it is worth, my PH always swung from 7.8 - 8.1 over the day, without any real problem from it.

After running phosban, i never saw any changes in my corals and fish health. This lowering in pH is a normal occurrence and an indication that ur parameters are trying to balance themselves out.

dont do any thing (but water changes....thank u for the correction meschaefer). Everything will come to its balance soon. Also dont overdose with phosban, it not only removes phosphates but also other important elements. I saw better results with using less but frequently changing pb media.

Please correct me if I am wrong .

If you have high phophates, running phosban will do wonders for your tank. Phosphates can cause alage blooms, browning of corals and slowed growth. If your phosphates are low, phosban will help keep them low.

Yes his system is attempting to balance out, but the way it does this is by changes in PH as opposed to lowering or raising clacium and alkalinity. He should take corrective action, on the high calcium. A couple of water changes should do it.

How much phosban are you using?

Thanks for the advice guys. I am currently up to 100g of phosba. So I need to lower my CA with a few partial water changes?
