My friend is thinking about purchasing one of these jellyfish tank setups. Has anyone heard anything (either good or bad) about raising jellyfish?

I've only done reefs so I'm not familiar with this area. Supposedly it's won Best New Aquarium Product at Global Pet Expo 2011.

Judging from the parts you get with the initial setup, there is quite a mark up for packaging the air pump, and filter with a heater and under gravel filter. It could be something special with those rocks though. I was thinking I can help her set up a tank for much less, provided that maintaining jellyfish isn't much harder than maintaining a reef tank.

Thanks!

Unfortunately, keeping jellies is much more complicated and difficult than that site would have you believe. For full disclosure I work at a public aquarium where we breed and rear 5 different species of jellies. There is a lot of work involved.

Rather than go into details I will just point you to this book, written by Chad Widmer formerly of the Monterey Bay Aquarium. This is considered THE reference in captive jelly husbandry by public aquarists, and I would urge anybody considering keeping jellies at home to start here.

iirc, Reefbuilders reported that there has been alot of complaints about those tanks...not worth it IMHO.
