I've never kept these guys before, but figured I'd try my hand at breeding them. I have three in there now and am just waiting/hoping for a pair to form before I remove the third wheel.

Very nice! If you ever need info/tips etc. on breeding them, Guy on the board here is an expert at it and helped me a lot with an inadvertent batch of fry I had. Well, my Cards had them  and Guy helped me salvage most of the fry.

Thanks LD, I'll keep that in mind. Did you end up raising yours up?

Raised 4 of them to a quarter size, then traded them to my LFS who put them into his 100 gallon refugium to grow the rest of the way out. Link to the threads about them:

Also there was more in my nano build off thread. Weird, most of the posts are missing. Wonder if they got lost in the switchover.

I was trying to get a pair also, I started with three. One was always fighting the others so was removed and the two that were left paired up. But one didnt eat at all and died (ORA tank raised supposedly but I duobt it.) SO I ended up with one. When I switch tanks I plan to get a couple more and try to get a pair again.

Wow, super awesome thread! Great pics and tons of excellent information from Guy. You get credit for asking all the right questions...and finding that link. Thanks. :)

Going to read your nano thread now.

Yeah, I've heard the pairing process is not always as easy as it sounds. In the 24hrs I've had these, I think I've noticed 2 that are more often together. And they swim/hover very close to each other, often touching. I watched the group of them in the LFS for almost an hour, and these two were acting similarly in the store. Time will tell...

I hope you can get them to breed. Through the years I've tried to get a good broodstock but always end up with dead fish. :(

And Tracy's thread is really good. Bookmarked for future reference. ;)

I've also raised some to adulthood--in fact, a couple of my captive-breds have their first mouthful of eggs right now--so I can try to be of help if you have questions.

Good luck!

Consider giving them lots of cover to hover in. Branching corals, seagrass, and anemones (even faux) are good. They can be skittish, and if you're not going for looks you may even consider blocking out most of the glass and really minimize sticking your hand in the tank. The 2 we have get super freaked whenever I have to clean the front glass and typically won't eat very well that day.

OTOH we may just have 2 super wimpy Banggais. :D

I also started with three in my 225g when I had it. Figured I would do the same and remove the odd one out. Well 8O . I ended up with one male and two females, who put up with each other. Perhaps it was the large tank with an abundance of rock.

I can tell you they kept that poor male busy. Had to catch him and remove him to get a break
Never tried catching him to raise the brood but I had 30in. deep, large overflows, with rubble in them. Mysid shrimp use to breed like crazy in the rubble. Some of the bangaii fry would get in there and survive by eating the baby mysid. The shrimp loved to eat frozen Cyclop-eeze and then the bangaii would eventually eat it also.

Had a few make it to juvie size. Gave them to friends. I finally lost one female and thenb when I shut down the tank, sold the pair to another aquarist.

You really must name them.
My little girls, as only kids would, named a pair of Perculas Lisa and Nutritious.

That's an adorable combination.

To be honest though, I've never named a fish. And I don't want to start any precedent by which they might try to name me.

The tank they're in was used to house a large Peacock mantis, and still has a fair amount of macroalgae from then. I thinned some of that out, but kept some Halimeda sp. and a Caulerpa (prolifera) in there for them. I also added a screen above the tank from which some mangroves will grow down. The mangroves are nice in that they provide many scattered shaded areas, and the submerged roots are kind of cool as well. All in all, I'm trying to give them plenty of stuff to hide in.

The algae is good. It'll promote microfaunal growth that'll give the little ones supplemental food. That is, unless you have other fish in there that browse the algae. I don't see where you talked about tankmates. What else is in there?

Hey Andy, nothing else in there except a Nassarius snail, and I'll probably add an astrea as well. But no other fish; I want it to be peaceful.
