Trouble is, that the sale price goes down as more specimens make it to market. Probably not fast enough to prevent you turning a tidy profit though. I still remember being in Japan when the acan craze hit the US and getting loads of pms begging me to export some acans (they were common and cheap in Japan). But the whole breaching CITES thing put me off...

Breaching local laws you mean. Japan is the one restricting the export, not CITES :)

Whichever. It was against the law.

Pssh.. CITES doesn't make laws :P

But yah, it's highly against Japanese laws to export coral. Odd given their stance on whaling but I digress into sump politics :(

That's pretty funny. I've tried, but could never get into these chalices. They never look as good as the pictures. However, I've never subscribed to the macro-lens-full-on-actinic-assault that is reefing, nowadays
I completely agree! To me, chalices always have a washed-out sort of tinge to them when viewed in person. The colors are just never as rich or vibrant in person. JMHO...

The chalices I got are actually intensely vibrant. I had to get the emerald mummy eye because it stood out like a neon sign in the 800 gallon display tank at Vivid Aquarium. The pink boobies and bazooka joe are the pinkest things in my tank. I have had some pretty boring chalices though, but there definitely are really nice ones out there. What I dislike about them most is they have no diversity in shapes.

Good point. Although, I have two that are now more oval due to the way I have them on my rock work.
I have a couple that are pretty cool under most lighting. My bubblegum chalice is baby blue with pink mouths. It would be more amazing if it would just grow.

Not to mention that world wide corals has beat you to that idea - they sell that chalice too - for the reduced price of $1500:)

jason fox miami chalice

But it seems to be a general craze with chalices right now -I have a problem paying $100+ for a single eye of a coral that is often less than 1/2 inch. I like the miam chalice and the mummy eye, but they're just too expensive for me right now

It's probably a link to World Wide Corals. They have two different $1500 chalices for sale :? They've been hyping these and apparently got people interested enough to bid these corals that high.

WWC has some nice stuff (a lot of "LE" corals come from them), but the prices are 8O
WTF? I am starting to realize that this whole reef thing is far out of my league. I guess I am going to have to make peace with my acros and torch corals and my random clam/cleaner shrimp. ...and I though getting married was expensive...

I wouldn't say out of your league, you just need to know how to avoid the hype, plenty of chalices out there no reason you NEED that color, plenty of sticks out there no reason you NEED a particular color.

Mocking it helps me with it. :D

you know the funny thing is, I think that I have a purple chalice that a friend gave me. I thought that it was a monti but it is curling under instead of over. Would that mean that it is a chalice?

No that wouldn't mean it's a chalice.

If it has tiny little polyps, then there's no way it's a chalice.... unless it had clove polyps growing on it or something :D

If you ever make it to an event you could get WWC stuff much cheaper ;)

You talk like it's a bad thing he sells stuff so high. Given the economy and the rate he sells his stuff, I'm rather pleased and encouraged people have the excess money to spend. But unlike you I depend on this hobby for my living :)

The abundance and care level just opens the door for more hobbyists, and the 'busy-bodies' with more income. Just add saltwater, a ton of actinic, and you're good. Great for the industry.

Some might argue that these designer chalices and such look better than SPS, but the bottom line is, a full blown SPS tank will always leave a full blown LPS tank in the dust.
