So is it wise to have a tiny Rio pump in my 5gallon Kalk/top off bucket. I thought it would be better to keep the water moving rather then becoming stagnant, but on further thought I wondered if constantly mixing the Kalk is bad for the mixture? I know not to use an air stone (as air depletes to potency of the Kalk mix), but using a power head should be fine in my eyes.
Thanks,
J.

Stirring kalk mixture is a good idea, but I don't know if it needs to be done constantly. I also wonder what the kalk would do for the powerhead's motor...

I have my mixer set to come on for one minute, four times a day.

Also, having the pump setting directly in the slurry will burn the impellars off the magnet in no time. I've destroyed one in as little as two days by adding too much powder to the mixer. If you use a mixer chamber as opposed to a stirrer, you can expect to replace the power head about once a year or so.

I simply shake the container... but then again the kalk isn't set to auto-dose

has anybody used liquid sodium hydroxide? like used in metal etching. I know this is gonna raise a few eyebrows, but i cant resist the temptation to try it... i mean Na hydroxide is sodium hydroxide, in dry form or liquid form as long as its Pure. So I am thinking that only the dilution ratio needs to be worked out. Its caustic strenght and i am waiting on the MSDS, to get all the info i can before i Leap... if anybody can point me to a post or website or knows for sure i am about to create disaster, I would hug your neck! I have scoured the forums and im not finding any refrence to it...another problem is knowing what the Prefferd Concentration actually is that drips into the system. I know that saturation is ideal, but it seems to be wasteful, If you follow the direction on Kents's Kalk... Whats the Layer thing about ? undissolved product or impurites?
Any thoughts?

Hate to burst your bubble but Kalkwasser = CALCIUM hydroxide.... Sodium hydroxide aka Lye... most likely will not do anything beneficial for your tank,

Settled then,
I will only use the pump for a few hours while the new powder is being added to the top off bucket.
Thanks,
J.

Thats what I have wondered. I usually just fill the container back up with RO and stir up the undesolved and top off again. If it is impurities, It does not seem like you would want to stir it up or add it at all.
