I travel a lot and I would love to be able to check on the temperature of my aquarium while away. Does anyone know of a cheap solution to accessing temperature over the Internet or phone?

I don't know any really cheap ways, but all the aquarium computers (Neptune Aquacontroller, Reefkeepers, et al) can do this. They are a few hundred dollars, but you'll be able to monitor (and control) most things over the internet ... not just temp. It's a good investment if you travel a lot.

I used mine [Aquacontroller] for that all the time, it would always alert me when I was gone (typically for 3 to 4 days a week), and it would tell me what the reason for the email (text really had it go right to my phone), and what the current settings were (what was on and what was off). I would suggest this would be the best bet if you are gone for a good amount of time. I would say its good for anyone if they can afford it. I also sprang for 2 internet cameras so i could log in and see the tank and one for the sump, that way if there was a over flow I was sure to see. Also good to have a friend (loved one or someone that likes the tank) in the near area that can kinda be on call and check on it should there be a problem and you are 400 miles away (like I am right now, sitting here in lexington), plus they might like the training if they were thinking about getting into the hobby as well. oohhh and :welcome:

Are you saying that the Aquacontroller would be the best bet or are you referring to this kind of controller in general? In either case, would you mind going into why you chose the Aquacontroller over the other(s)?

Thanks,

Well I like them in general, the reason I went with it, it seems to be very well liked by the hobby community that is out there, it had networking and computer access (so that it could email me and say "HELP HELP!!")and I could have the logs to see if this was sudden or has been climbing for a while (I had it accessed by my web server so i could look online to see when I was on the road). I dont know if others are better at these tasks or worse, but I didnt have a back up person to rely on so I chose what would be the most reputable out there. Others might be able to chime in on their controller of choice. I hope that helps, if not I can try and answer more questions.

I use a product from iobridge that just plugs into my router and a webpage gives me information on water temperature and previous history and has the potential to control pumps/heaters, it can also be configured to send you messages when trigger levels have been hit i.e. low/high temps etc.

The system isn't specially designed for fish tanks but it certainly is simple to use and avoids having to tweak any ports etc on a router. My tank information page is at http://www.burpthefrog.com

Kev

ok yeah that was fun, I burped the frog a few times!!
And this is similar to what I had, you just need to see what needs you have and go with that product, I needed more then what Kev needed. both are good but his option seems better for your needs then what I used as it was ment to do a lot more monitoring then what you require

Great idea! Your frog's probably not been burped quite so much for a while. Thanks!
