I'm all excited about some free stuff I've received in the past few weeks

20 gal AGA
Green Wolf Eel
135 gal (haven't seen it yet to know if I should get excited)

So...buddy was tossing some tanks (he collects snakes) and let me know he had some in his truck if I was interested. Went out and he had the 20 and a 10 gal terrarium. I took the 20 home, cleaned all the snake ickies out and filled it for 2 days to check for leaks. All good.

Went to the petstore and found a stand on sale for $60, got 2 bags of Caribbean live sand for $16 each (they were stocked in wrong area - should have been $39 each) also got a 30gal filter. Got home and put it all together. Next day the tank had settled from the sandstorm - sucked out all the grayish mulm from the sand and added about 20lb of fully cured LR, some form my established tanks. Back to the LFS and picked up a rescue - Green Wolf Eel. I donated $10 to the homeless pet fund and they gave him to me free since he has a small fungal lesion on his tail and he'd been there for months. Got him home and acclimated him then dropped him in the tank. Left lights off until next day when I attempted to feed him - no luck. Next day he was more interested..swimming around more and he's very interactive when I'm by the tank. Offered him some krill and he gobbled them up. Gave him 3 big pieces so he's happy. LFS had been feeding him goldfish the entire time :(

He's doing very well and his tail appears to be clearing up. I tested the salinity of the water from the LFS and he was in 1.016! This is supposedly their saltwater tanks...I'm thinking that low would qualify more as 'brackish' He has 2 small wounds on his tail - looks like some type of fungus (pics included below) Anyone care to take a crack at an ID? I'm currently not treating him as I'm seeing if the better conditions/food help him fight it off on his own.

I have a Bak-Pak skimmer that should be arriving this week to assist with keeping the tank clean and adding a bit of water flow and aeration. I put in a small rock with 2 3" dia. mushrooms for a bit of color. The LR is doing really well - lots of purplish coralline. Also have some dime sized brittle stars (at least 2) that kick around in there. Some nifty sponges and the other odd LR critters (feather dusters, at least one apstatia, and some odd clear hydroid/anemone looking things)

A few things:
How often/how much should I feed this guy? I don't want to starve him, but definitely don't want to overfeed in his tank.

Seeing the tank, should I add some type of better enclosed cave for him to hide in?

I was thinking of eventually adding other hardy SPS stuff - nothing fancy, maybe some zoos or ?? I've only ever had mushies and a small bit of zoos that my urching ate :(

Would he prefer softer lighting or does he not really care?

Here's some pics of him and his tank - also the star and anemone (sorry for quality - they were taken through a magnifying glass as my cameras macro mode sux) If you want to see larger images, right click 'Properties' on any of the images and cut/paste the URL to your browser and remove the -800 from the end of each file name.

Cool looking fish, but I haven't a clue as to husbandry for one :D , except that you seem to be doing the right things to try and get him healed up.

Thanks - I just hope I don't regret his purchase. Fiancee is now asking if he'd fit in a 135 with a puffer. I really don't relish the though of a move cross country with all I have now. Last thing I need is a big puffer to worry about!

He's doing very well as far as his appetite is concerned, plus he's exceedingly smart. He already recognizes myself and the fiancee and he's eating krill from my hand and she feeds him with a plastic baby fork. He comes right up to the fork and gulps down his krill for her.

She fed him 3 this morning around 6ish and I fed him an additional 4 this afternoon. I think he'd keep eating until he popped!

Hmm..he produces quite a bit of waste. What kind of clean up crew could I use? Will he eat hermits? He's not a true eel...

Just a fyi it is common in fish holding / display systems in a LFS to run at 1.016 or even a bit lower. The low salinity keeps parasites and many pathogens under control.

the 'green wolf eel' is actually a member of the dottyback family

a nearly bulletproof fish that feeds mainly on live foods-whatever it can catch and swallow, but trainable to eat frozen/prepared foods (krill, ocean plankton, silversides, clam, etc etc)

they can become fairly tame-here, within a few days, i can pick them up gently and they will sit in my cupped hand calmly and nonchalantly rest there for minutes (under water, natch :P )

i'd not put any small crustaceans/snails in with it (shrimp, worms, small inverts are all fair game as far as it's concerned ;)

there's an article (a very good one) on the dottyback family, including the wolf eels, in aaolm's archives, iirc
