Here we go! This spring I posted a thread about partial skimming, what a reaction it got. I have been partially skimming since then for 12 hours a day. 3pm till 3am, and have seen no ill effects to it. A few others do also.

That's great Bob! I just wanted to know why?? I mean i see no ill effects running it all the time. It just another thing i don't have to keep track of and i don't have room for another timer.
Wasn't tryin to bash anybody.

some say that there is such a thing as overskimming. removing waste, and also valuable nutrients/minerals along with it. i haven't seen the effects of that, skimming 24/7. maybe my skimmer is underpowered :?

If it works well for your tank and scheduled routine, then there's nothing wrong with partial skimming. If nutrients start to get out of hand, then you just have to adjust.

I stop skimming when I add marine snow once or twice a week. I usually get busy and forget about turning it back on for a few hours. No ill effects with that schedule, but this is essentially 24/7.....

I posted the same question a few months back, so even though I do not know why some people do it, there must be a reason. I heard it has something to do with with helping to balance out the PH fluctuation with the lighting.
Keep us posted,
J.

sometimes you can overskim, but it's unlikely to happen in most aquariums unless you have a skimmer that is way too large or hooked up improperly. if you add a lot of supplements to your tank (like iron, iodine, magnesium, calcium, strontium and molybdenum) you could possibly be skimming some of these out. only a small amount of these could be skimmed, and this really only occurs if the bubbles in the skimmer are too fine, which would produce a "wet" skimmate.

the only time i would suggest unplugging your skimmer is if you have a lot of macroalgae. sometimes skimming will remove nutrients that the macroalgae thrives on. however, this is also unlikely unless you have an absurdly large skimmer.

i skim 24/7/365. it's best to continually skim that way you pull all of the junk out of the water.

how do you hook a skimmer up improperly?

your skimmer can be hooked up improperly if it is putting out too fine of bubbles.

in the case of pm bullet skimmers, a lot can go wrong. the skimmer output can be below the water line, you can use too large a pump, etc. there's a lot of ways to hook up a skimmer improperly.
