i have no luck at all with the remora we purchased new. we've had it for quite some time. it skims next to nothing. all it does is make considerable noise and put microbubbles in the water, despite the prefilter box. i have it adjusted all the way down. the cup bottoms out, and every day, it's spotless clean.
it's not my wonderful tank keeping, i assure you. when i do my weekly water change, the water coming out is visibly dirty.
does anyone have any suggestions/ideas on how i can get this thing to work?
people rave about these things, and i'm ready to take it out to the driveway and beat it with a hammer.
do i need a larger pump than the one that is supplied with it?
should i use the mj's venturi along with the aqua-c's pantented spray injunktion system?

wow

i loved mine, and it always worked great..

lets see.....

1) Make sure the screw you remove to clean it isn't screwed in too far.

2) Is the foam coming up the riser tube at all? You can take a flashlight to it and see.

3) I wouldn't put a larger pump than a 1200 on it

Hope it works out for you. Like I say mine always did a great job, and its now doing a great job for someone else!

the screw is not in too far. i've never cleaned it because it never got a chance to get dirty. i just opened it up and looked inside. it's clean.
the foam is at the very bottom of the riser tube. it's quite weak.
i am going to remove it and try a different pump tomorrow. if that doesn't work, it's going on ebay.

You know I was actually deciding between the Remora Pro or a Sump/Euro Reef RS100 for my 75. The Remora Pro, I too thought, was supposed to be great. But after recently searching on this site I did find a lot of posts of disappointment and over-hype, surprisingly. I have no personal experience w/it, just my findings. The Remora upgrade was going to be an easy way out of plumbing, but obv looks like the Sump/EuroReef is the way to go.

That said, I'm sorry to hear about your experience and hope it some how ends up working out for you. Let us know...

sometimes if they are to deep in the sump they are not effective. I think you don't want your sump water level to be more than half your skimmer height.I like to keep my sump on the full side so I put mine on a brick and it made a big difference.

pcardone, who are you responding to?
if it was me, my remora is on the back of our 30 cube. it's not in the sump.

I use the Rio pump on mine. Have it in the sump on a 120. In a weeks time it fills the cup. I have the cup raised.

I'm about done with it though. Went with ER for the sump i'm building right now.

IME the Remora was OK for a small hang-on, but none of the hang-ons I've used come remotely close to regular in-sump/recirc skimmer performance. There are a few good hang-on skimmers (the larger Deltec for example - the new AquaMedic looks promising too), but they're not worth the money IMO. The Tunze in-tank units are another option.

Personally, if I do another sumpless system with a skimmer I will probably shelf mount a small recirc model near/behind the tank and feed it with an in-tank powerhead or maybe DIY my own meshwheel hang-on.

Sorry, not helpful, I know...
...on a brighter note, I like your new in-wall setup X! :)

thanks chris. i'm torn between tearing down the 30 and putting everything in the 200, or hooking up the custom sump i bought for the 30, and picking up another smaller ASM skimmer. i could kick myself for selling my G1X prematurely.

I bought mine from SnowManSnow and it's worked great from day one!

Every day I have it set at 1/2way on the collection cup and its always full of a liquid that looks like coffee. I for one, really like mine.

BTW, its on a 50G total system volume hanging on the back of my sump with a MJ1200. Its also on the inlet side of my sump, so I know the MJ is sucking in a lot of bubbles from the inlet. I bet if I moved it it would work even better.

My Remora Pro came with the Mag 3. My impellar on the Mag 3 went south and I added a Rio 1400 (was all that was available locally), my skimate went way down(cup is all the way down). I have a Mag 5 on its way to replace the Rio. I don't have any exp. with the MJ 1200, but I would suggest to replace it with a Mag.

I too am disappointed with my remora PRO. Although I do get skimmate at half way up, it's not as thick and smelly as I would like. Although it could be that there aren't a lot of nutrients to pull out as the tank isn't heavily stocked...

The thing I can't get past is the noise!!! :x
